Local high school students participate in elections training as part of a collaboration between SCAC TV, Shasta Scout, and the county elections office in the fall of 2020.

Vote. Vote. Vote.

On June 7 we'll all be voting, right?!

I also signed up to be the lowly Associated Press election stringer again this year, a process that involves running my "mobile office" out of a shadowy corner of the County elections office on the night of June 7 so I can hand off voting results from elections staff to the AP offices by phone every hour (how old fashioned!) In between, I'll be posting to Shasta Scout's Instagram and Facebook stories so I hope you'll check in there with questions and comments and check out what I'm up to! :)

Remember the Shasta County primaries happen June 7.  And regardless of your political persuasions we're rooting for every single one of you to vote!  We've shared voting resources below with hopefully more to come.

CalMatters Resource for State Candidates:
We think you'll love this handy guide which is easy to navigate but chock full of information. For example, check out their guide to the state Controller, an office most of us probably know little about!  You can use this handy resource to guide your big picture understanding while you vote, whether you're voting at home or in the ballot box.

🇺🇸 Almost Half of America Believes in the Great Replacement Theory (SPLC) Almost 48% of those polled subscribed to the conspiracy theory, according to survey results just released by the Southern Poverty Law Center and Tulchin Research. The belief is bipartisan although it skews to the right with nearly 7 in 10 Republicans in the survey group agreeing to at least some extent that demographic changes in the United States are deliberately driven by liberal and progressive politicians attempting to gain political power by “replacing more conservative white voters.”  Hat tip: Teddy Wilson

💦 Does California Have Enough Water For Lots of New Homes? (LA Times) Yes, say experts, because statewide, 80% of California water is used for agriculture, not by households. Another 10% waters lawns, fills pools, and washes cars and sidewalks. While residents can and should reduce their water use through conservation, the biggest savings in residential use will come in how and where we design and build new housing and new communities some expert say.

🐝 Bees are ‘fish’ under Calif. Endangered Species Act (Reuters) Matthew Sanders of Stanford Law School’s Environmental Law Clinic hailed the decision as “a win for the bumblebees, all imperiled invertebrates in California, and the California Endangered Species Act.” Insects are “foundational to California’s agricultural production and healthy ecosystems,” he added.
