COMMUNICATIONS

Director of Communications, here! Exciting Update! We have received SEVEN very strong applications for LCC/LLLC's upcoming internship (4 young men, and three young women have applied!) I look forward to closely reviewing all applications with Lisa Jackson and in consultation with the CCT. Speaking of the CCT... you may recall that one of our interns from last year, Julia Flor, has since been appointed to serve on LCC’s Committee for Communications and Technology (CCT). I am so encouraged by our young applicants, who all have presented their desire to serve the church with such enthusiasm! I am also excited that an intern from last summer will now be a part of the application review process through her role on the committee! I ask for your prayers as we deliberate.

SERMON OF THE WEEK

These weekly sermons, written by various LCC pastors, are primarily intended for congregations without a pastor and for those unable to provide online services during exceptional circumstances. Each written sermon is accompanied by the Collect of the Day, appointed Scripture Readings, suggested hymns, and prayers. The Scripture Readings are from the Three-Year Lectionary Series of the Lutheran Service Book (LSB). The suggested hymns are taken from Lutheran Service Book: Hymn Selection Guide – (OT) are hymns that fit with the Old Testament Reading, (E) the Epistle, and (G) the Gospel.

Convention App for Delegates Live

This is the first time LCC has provided delegates with a way to engage with each other before and during the convention via an App. This App provides navigation aids for the convention sites and is the first step in trying to reduce the amount of paper a convention uses. Attendees have received information via email to download and sign up with the App.

All convention information for the church-at-large is on our website, as will be the live stream. Discussion of convention matters also continues on the Servant Leader Network site, for all LCC members.

PRAYERS

Prayer for Ukraine:

Heavenly Father, God of all concord, it is Your gracious will that Your children on earth live together in harmony and peace.  Defeat the plans of all those who would stir up violence and strife, war, and bloodshed, and, according to Your will, end the current conflict that now rages in Ukraine. Protect those who are suffering and being displaced from their homes. Bring a restoration of calm and security, and heal the wounds that have been inflicted.

We especially commend to Your care and keeping our Lutheran Church–Canada missionary in Ukraine, Rev. Oleksiy Navrotskyy and his family; Bishop Alexander Yurchenko; and all the pastors and members of the congregations of the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Ukraine. Preserve them from all harm and danger. Grant them an extra measure of Your Holy Spirit at this time that they would remain steadfast in the one true faith in Him who is Lord and Saviour of all. In the midst of this conflict, empower them to reach out to others with the precious Gospel of God’s peace and love in Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lutheran Church–Canada has a responsibility, especially as a community of faith, to provide a safe environment for the vulnerable sector, ministry staff and volunteers. Iris Barta, Human Resources and Administration Manager, with the LCC Board of Directors Personnel Committee has been working with Plan To Protect® to create an Abuse Prevention Policy for Synod Office and template policies for congregations. Together, we are committed to achieving the highest standard of abuse prevention and protection of the vulnerable sector. We believe this work with Plan To Protect® will be of great benefit to all congregations and members of our Synod.

Benefits for Congregations

Congregations will receive a Plan to Protect® Guide which consists of 289 pages of best practices and policies and 44 appendices with form and guideline templates. Each congregation or parish representative attending our upcoming Synodical Convention can pick up their guide at registration. Those not attending Convention can request their copy by emailing officemanager@lutheranchurch.ca. Plan to Protect® has created policy templates for LCC congregations that will be available from Synod Office. Congregations will have access to resources and support that will enable them to create strong Abuse Prevention Policies that support our spiritual and moral obligation to protect our community of faith as well as meet legal obligations and requirements for insurance coverage.

Not only has Plan to Protect® created policy templates for LCC congregations that will be available from Synod Office, congregations will also have access to resources and support that will enable them to create strong Abuse Prevention Policies and training resources that support our spiritual and moral obligation to protect our community of faith, as well as meet legal obligations and requirements for insurance coverage. Charlie Smith-Brake, Director of Policy, Consulting and Communications at Plan to Protect® will be at convention to provide information at a breakout session and at an exhibit table with materials and to answer your question. In the meantime, learn more at www.plantoprotect.com.

LUTHERAN FOUNDATION

The estate of a single or widowed person with a $120,000 RRSP, will pay approximately $45,000 in income tax, or higher, if you also include work income, CPP, OAS, pension income, or have capital gains on non-registered securities or secondary properties. Many individuals are excited to learn a large portion of those tax dollars will instead be used to offset significant gifts they have already directed to mission and ministry through their estate. Although it varies by province, on average 45% of an estate gift is “reimbursed” due to the tax credits generated by the gift. This tax credit would apply regardless of which estate asset is used to make the gift. For an overview of which types of assets might be gifted, and how the timing or routing of the gift (direct or via the Will) affects the receipting of the gift, check out this useful overview – Charitable Giving and Tax Implications.

THE DAY OF PENTECOST
(June 5, 2022)
Genesis 11:1–9
Acts 2:1–21
John 14:23–31

The Holy Spirit Gives Peace

Following the flood, Noah’s descendants failed to spread out and fill the earth as God had spoken. Rather, they exalted themselves; with “one language and the same words” (Gen. 11:1), they spoke proudly and arrogantly. The Lord humbled them by confusing “the language of all the earth,” dividing and dispersing the people (Gen. 11:9). That dispersal was reversed on Pentecost Day (the 50th day of Easter), when God caused the one Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to be preached in a multitude of languages. “At this sound the multitude came together” (Acts 2:6), for the preaching of Christ is the primary work of the Holy Spirit, whereby He gathers people from all nations into one Church. The Holy Spirit teaches and brings to our remembrance the words of Jesus, which are the words of the Father who sent Him. These words bestow forgiveness and peace to those who keep and hold on to them in love for Jesus. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27).
