Our Conversation Is Getting Around
On May 24, Climate Lab hosted a Zoom panel discussion about how communities are responding to New York’s plan for decarbonizing the economy: “Your Role in New York’s Climate Action.” More than 100 River readers registered to take part in the conversation, and more have written to us since to catch up on the event.
Video from the event is posted on Chronogram’s YouTube page, along with a link to a transcript of our text chat, in which participants shared a lot of great links and resources on how to learn more about the state’s climate plans, and talk back to them. We are also sharing video and audio from the event with WJFF in Jeffersonville and Catskills Air in Margaretville. If other community and public access stations are interested in sharing content from our River events, we encourage them to get in touch with us.
Despite a late-breaking panelist cancellation—we were sorry to miss Rahwa Ghirmatzion of PUSH Buffalo!—we had a spirited and engaged conversation that ranged across a broad array of issues, from the local health effects of air pollution, to the different shape of rural and urban climate concerns, to how people can access and afford more climate-friendly technology, to different ways the state could fund climate action. Our panelists—former state Senator and energy policy expert Jen Metzger, attorney and Climate Action Council member Raya Salter, and local environmental justice advocate Rev. Gregory Simpson—brought a wealth of experience and compassion to the conversation.
This was the third climate event I’ve moderated for The River in the past year. They have all been so different from each other. In each one, I’ve learned new things and heard new perspectives. Climate is an issue that touches every other, and there are still so many conversations we haven’t had yet.
The River is grateful to Sustainable Hudson Valley for cosponsoring the event. You can learn more about their work on climate and community at sustainhv.org.
Support from our readers helps us do deep coverage of climate and other important issues in the Hudson Valley and Catskills region. Strong communities depend upon good information. If you’re not already a supporting member, you can help us continue our work by joining today.
As always, you can read all our stories for free on therivernewsroom.com. Support from the community also helps us keep our coverage free for all readers.
Thanks for being part of the conversation! We couldn’t do it without you.
