Dear KTC Community Members,

A lot is happening at the KTC as we leave behind the cool and rainy days of spring and look forward to the fair and fine days of summer play.

Our first ever Switch Doubles Social Tournament got off to a perilous start this past Saturday with early morning rain and gloomy skies, but by 10 am the clouds broke, the sun came out and matches got underway. Over 50 players competed in over 150 sets played throughout the day, with new partners for each set. The winners (players with the most sets won) were Sandra McDonald and Christian Williams who tied with 4 sets won and thus taking home the KTC t-shirt prize. We were delighted to see many new faces (and familiar ones) and hope they continue to participate at future KTC events. A special note of thanks to Asia Zolnierczyk, Arjun Devnani and Luke Webb for organizing such a great social tournament and barbecue!

What a terrific beginning to the KTC tournament season! Other great activities at the KTC will unfold in the coming weeks, including the always-popular Mixed Doubles Tournament in mid-June.

Lots of news to share, so please keep reading to learn more about progress on the clubhouse restoration, the grand opening Tennis Ball, and our new line up of KTC teaching pros.
Staffing News

We are pleased to announce that Arjun Devnani will be the Next Level Camp Director at our KTC satellite location, the Kingston East Community Centre. We are delighted that the City of Kingston is making these facilities available to us and that Arjun, working with Tony Roth, will run the program using Noble Tennis School methodology.

In addition to his steward position, Rishi Laird will be taking on the Summer Camp Director role at KTC and has a full roster of enthusiastic camp instructors lined up and ready to go. Well done and welcome again, Rishi. Rounding out this summer's camp staff are: Sam Rayner, Ben Lienhard, Rowan Melles, Max Dingle, Nigel Flynn, Sarah Kathiresan, Katrina Lenart, Felix Hand and Reimy Mulligan.

It was a long and challenging process to fill out our program staff this season. We are very grateful to Tony Roth for assisting the program committee in this endeavour.
Clubhouse Update

Those who have been at the club recently will have seen the steady progress being made on the restoration and expansion of our old clubhouse. We're thrilled that the restoration has preserved the historic look of the original clubhouse, while also significantly expanding both indoor and outdoor spaces, and modernizing and upgrading virtually every part of the original building and its exterior spaces.

The interior of the clubhouse is shaping up beautifully, with framing, drywall and painting now complete, plumbing and electrical roughed in, windows and doors installed and even the showers in place. We anticipate that members will enjoy the much-expanded space in the change rooms and washrooms, and the convenience of the new stewards’ kiosk off the lower deck. The spacious and airy second-floor club room will make an ideal spot for campers on rainy days and for club social events.

Looking at the exterior of the building, you will see that the new larger decks (lower and upper) have been finished, the exterior staircase and exterior doors are in, the Malbec siding and green trim are now complete, and the accessible concrete ramp has been poured.

Still, there is work to be done. While Anglin has worked diligently to keep the project on schedule, they have been delayed at times by the slowness of supplies, including glass panels for the staircase and veranda, and flooring for the interior of the clubhouse. Good news to report though! The glass has finally arrived and should be installed soon, and the flooring is expected in the next week or two. Once the flooring is laid, the kitchen and kiosk cabinets - which are currently in storage in Taco’s garage -  can be assembled and installed.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, the end of construction is finally in sight, with a grand opening of the new clubhouse planned for early July. It’s amazing that this is finally happening.

In the meantime, we are grateful to our members who seem to have embraced the notion that ‘play must go on’ even as we make do with porta-potties, only 6 courts and yet another tent swept away by the storm.  Please bear with us for a few more weeks when we will all have something to celebrate.

Register NOW for the KTC Mixed Doubles Club Championships
Thursday, June 16 - Sunday, June 19

Your KTC tournament team is already looking ahead to the next big event. This season Arjun Devnani has stepped in as Tournament Director with assistance from Asia Zolnierczyk and JF Thibault.

First round play starts at 4:30 pm on Thursday, June 16th, with matches continuing until approximately 9:30 pm (same with Friday). You may have matches on the Thursday or Friday but not both. Saturday will be a full day of tennis with matches starting at 9:00am and continuing into the late afternoon or early evening with the quarter-finals. Play continues Sunday morning with the semis, followed by the tournament finals in the early afternoon.

As always, the timing of matches is subject to change if the weather doesn't cooperate. We will do our best to accommodate everyone: if matches are delayed, stewards and tournament organizers will keep members up to date about revised match times.

This event is open exclusively to current KTC members. The entry fee is $20 per person (not per team), with players guaranteed at least 3 matches. Each tournament participant will receive a tasty lunch box sandwich, catered by Juniper Café: the sandwiches will be made available around noon on Saturday. When you register, let us know which sandwich option you prefer: Local Chicken, Mennonite Salami, or Mediterranean Mushroom (vegetarian).
Registration closes Monday, June 13th at 9:00 pm so sign up now!

Instructions for tournament registration and fee payment can be found here.  If you are looking for a partner, a steward can take your name down and we will try to find you one (no guarantees!).

Only teams where both players have registered and paid their fees by Monday, June 13th at 9:00 pm will be entered into the tournament draw.

For members looking to volunteer their time over the weekend, please email Asia Zolnierczyk at membership@kingstontennisclub.com
