Hello Hazelwood Friends!

Pentecost Sunday sure was fun, wasn’t it? THANK YOU for all your active participation, to all our musicians who brought us such wonderful special music, and to our Food & Fellowship Hosts who helped us extend the celebration after worship, including party favors! It was a great day to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of The Church.

I also want to acknowledge that some of you may be skeptical that individual flames appeared over the disciples’ heads. And that is okay; the Pentecost story is still for you too. Because that fire serves as a symbol of our ability to think about and to understand God in new and inspired ways. You see, God’s Spirit is a Spirit of Change.

Sometimes it is change so small we hardly notice at the time, and sometimes it is Dramatic Change that can’t be missed! While the Spirit IS a Comforter, she is much more than that too. This account of the Holy Spirit’s arrival in the beginning of the book of Acts points to the fact that the Holy Spirit is not just for ourselves. We are given the Holy Spirit so that we might act and speak of God’s love as embodied in Jesus in ways that others can understand it!

This means that The Church has been ever changing to meet the needs of the people with whom it seeks to share the Good News throughout its history. While there are some things that endure, such as observing the Lord’s Supper, how, when, and where we worship has certainly seen changes since those earliest believers.

But we do not have to look that far to see how it has changed even in just the last 40 or 50 years. I can remember going to church three times a week, year-round, with a week-long revival at least once a year, and Vacation Bible School lasted for two weeks every summer. Does this mean that the people back then were more faithful Christian than those today?? No, it does not. How often we go to a particular building is not the measure of how faithfully we are following the teachings of Christ.

The rest of the Book of Acts is full of stories of the Jesus Followers dealing with changes and having to figure out how to remain faithful in changing circumstances. BUT the Spirit was at work enabling them to do so! I look forward to exploring some of these stories in worship with you in the coming weeks as we consider how they may apply to us today. It is my prayer that we will prayerfully be open to the work of the Spirit in our midst as well! The times, “they are a changin’” and we need to keep up; and with the help of the Spirit, we surely are empowered to do so!

Shalom, Rev Pamela

Pentecost Celebration

For those who may have missed it, last week we celebrated Pentecost- the birthday of the Christian Church. We had a fun, interactive worship service followed by a special Coffee and Food Fellowship, complete with birthday cake! Special thanks to Steve Cartwright and Glen Sulanke for hosting the fellowship time, and to all who helped make this special day a success!

Two volunteers are needed for each day to bag groceries for the clients. Please note the change in the schedule- we are now serving 4 days instead of 3.

Mark Your Calendars

Christmas in July is coming back! Starting July 3 and continuing every Sunday through the end of July, we will be collecting non-perishable items for Christian Ministries' Food Pantry. Items can be placed under the Christmas tree in Sulanke Commons.

Items needed include:
Boxed dinners, cereal, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, canned fruit, toilet tissue, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath soap, diapers.
*Boxed dinners and canned fruit are especially needed

Hearts & Hands United Back-to-School Distribution will be on Saturday, August 6, from 10am-2pm at the Fairgrounds Memorial Building. This event is for children who live and attend school in Delaware County. Goals are to provide school supplies and a new pair of shoes for students who are not able to afford them. Each organization that helps has one size, one gender- that way there will be enough shoes in each size to meet the needs.

Hazelwood has been asked to provide 30 new pairs of men's size 9 athletic shoes. We will be collecting now through Sunday, July 31. There will be a tote in Sulanke Commons for the donated shoes. Please remove shoes from boxes, tie laces together, and place in the tote. Thanks!
