PETA Takes Aim at University Research

This week, the University of Washington's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee was granted a preliminary injunction after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sought to publicly reveal university researchers associated with animal testing.

PETA has become notorious in recent years for its use of shock value in protesting animal rights issues, often sharing inflammatory headlines and graphic images to "make sure [the message] sticks." Their focus on university research is not a new phenomenon but continues to ignite reputational challenges as institutions balance research advancements, ethical practices, and external perceptions.

Enrollment Decline Continues

According to new estimates from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, undergraduate enrollment decreased 4.7% this spring compared to 2021. Total postsecondary enrollment, which includes graduate students, fell 4.1%.

To date, the undergraduate student body has dropped by nearly 1.4 million students, or 9.4%, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The total postsecondary student body decreased 7.4% during the same period.  Questions around degree value, student debt, and the broader impact of the pandemic have continued into the summer term as universities plan for a critical fall semester.
