There is a great song by Adele, and it starts, “Hello, it’s me.” The lyrics continue until they get to the main chorus, “Hello from the other side.” Every time I hear it, I envision the SNL skit written around that song. The scene was a large, family meal. Gathered around the table were sons and daughters, boyfriends and girlfriends, moms and dads, grandparents and grandchildren. Everything begins quiet, then one person says something that sparks an argument. As soon as it gets heated, a little girl in the corner puts on the Adele song. As soon as the music starts, the fighting ends. They all begin to sing. The music stops, they argue. The music is on, they sing. That is the pattern. Humorously, the more they sing, the more they all begin to look like Adele.

I was reminded of that skit when I saw this year’s theme of the annual business meeting of the United Methodist Church in this area known as the North Georgia Annual Conference: A place for you at the table. By the time you read this, it will be well into the business meetings. People of all ages and from all places of North Georgia will be gathered “at the family meal” bringing their own opinions and joys and fears and needs.

For me, I am happy to be invited. I am officially transferring from the Kentucky Annual Conference to the North Georgia Conference. So, like Adele’s song, I will begin my time with the lyrics “Hello, it’s me!” Then, I imagine, like the skit, it will be followed by much conversation. There will be learnings about what people believe—what they agree with and what they don’t—with much singing in between!

But, what I ultimately hope is that through more introductions, more conversations, more music, we will all begin to look more and more like our creator: taking on images of kindness, traits of patience, characteristics of love. Because having a place at the table really means we all recognize the sacred image that lives in us all. And, that is worth gathering and celebrating.

I will see you on the other side of Conference!

Blessings,
