Summer Sewing Plans

I started with some minimalist, geometric, improv piecing and went to town with the quilting, starting with the jagged stipple (one of my favorite motifs!). I proceeded organically just making the next decision at each step without a clear plan in mind.

An opportunity to learn about cultural appropriation in quilting and creating.

Prism Play is on display in San Bruno, California.

I’ve been considering doing something like this.

100 days of inspiring hand-carved stamps.

Fiber art, texture, and color? Heck yeah!

Have you participated in a quilt along?

Trees of flowers, bees, and leaves.

As I write this, my kids have seven school days left before Summer break. They have plans of reading, video games, and creative endeavors. I’m looking forward to sleeping in a little. And to board games and puzzles and ice cream and outings. They both also have quilt projects in progress, so maybe they’ll get to work on those. The studio has air conditioning, so sewing may be a good option when it heats up outside.

I’m also looking forward to just feeling a little less busy and overscheduled. (Check back in two months from now to see how that goes!) I have numerous projects that I’m excited to work on. Namely my improv stars from my quilt bee that have been residing on my design wall inducing curious questions from folks on Zoom in recent weeks.

I finished my 100 Day Project with 3" mixed media squares last week and today I dove into Index Card a Day. I’m excited to keep creating with paper and seeing more and more ways for these techniques to sneak into my quilt making.

With the changing season (into Summer or Winter depending where you are), is your creative time changing? What are you currently working on?

Happy quilting,

On My Design Wall

A day late, but hopefully not a dollar short… E. A. asked us for “hope” blocks for her May bee blocks. As you can see, I’m still working on my second block which will be very low contrast with dark grey letters on a dark purple background. My finished block is 10" x 13" featuring skinny strips that are 1/8" wide. I teach this technique in Improv Log Cabins and Building an Improv Toolbox, my new favorite workshop. Please hit reply to email me if you’re interested in having me teach for your group or guild.

On-Demand Workshop: Creating a Scrappy Slab

My first On-Demand Workshop is now open for individuals! Creating a Scrappy Slab includes all my tips and tricks for creating fabric from your scraps of any size. The course is a combination of videos and photo tutorials.

The beauty of an on demand class is that you can do it on your timeline, in the comfort of your own home. Want to take the course with friends? Each of you register individually, then you can work together on Zoom or in person.
