Upcoming ISNZ Professional Development Events to look out for:

On June 1st, Komodo presented at the ISNZ Child Protection and Wellbeing Seminar in Wellington. Their psychology lead spoke of the importance of the 'Window of Tolerance' and how educators can support students to remain in this window.

Stress arises when the combination of internal and external pressures exceeds the individual’s resources to cope with their situation. Whilst stress is inevitable and a valuable part of learning, when students do not cope well with stress this can have a very drastic effect on their development, education engagement, and behaviour.

The way you handle stress can depend on your window of tolerance and how wide or narrow it is. Simply put, the window of tolerance describes the best state of ‘arousal’ or stimulation in which we are able to function and thrive in everyday life. When students exist within this window, they are able to learn effectively, be creative, and relate well to themselves and others. In this space, students are able to deal with the daily stressors of life without anxiety, exhaustion, or feeling out of control.

Schools and educators are in a unique position where they can support students to:
  • expand their window of tolerance;
  • learn how to stay in the window of tolerance;
  • build confidence to regulate and get back inside the window of tolerance.

Empowering students: Safely using the internet for learning

Digital literacy is an essential skill for learners of all ages, including the youngest primary students. One of the biggest challenges for Cambridge is guiding schools to take the lead in engaging safely and positively with technology, as well as helping schools to support parents’ understanding of their children’s evolving relationship with new technologies. Cambridge’s curricula encourage learners to have a strong sense of self so they are better able to navigate the compelling narratives and stories they encounter in an increasingly ‘post-truth’ world. Media literacy and confident critical thinking go hand in hand after all.

The digital world allows students to connect, collaborate, innovate and discover new information on an ever-broadening scale. The Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary Digital Literacy curricula supports students to develop the digital skills that will help with many aspects of their future learning and development including:

  • understanding their place, and the place of others, in an interconnected world and make educated decisions about the information that they encounter online
  • learning how to become positive contributors to the digital world
  • using digital technology safely and protect their own physical and emotional wellbeing

The PCSchool team - back on NZ turf.

The PCSchool team were excited to be back on NZ turf this month to deliver a series of “Lunch and Learns” for our schools.Over 100 people attended our Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch sessions. Both Lisa Sutcliffe and I enjoyed re-connecting with our customers.
Thank you again to our Schools who hosted us, including Auckland Grammar, Southwell School, Scots College and The Cathedral Grammar School.
Whilst we appreciate that with technology, we have been able to connect with our schools remotely during these last few years, however, nothing replaces being face to face.  It was also great to be able to introduce Flynn Sutcliffe, our Auckland-based Customer Support Specialist to our schools.
We host an annual PCSchool conference in August on the Gold Coast in Australia. Registrations will open for this shortly. We are also looking forward to returning several times this year for the School Business Manager’s Conference in July, ISNZ in August and ASBA NZ in September.

If you have any further questions or would like to meet with us, please don’t hesitate to contact Lisa Grainger via email at lisa.grainger@pcschool.net

Thank you from PCSchool

WHAT TO ASK EDTECH PROVIDERS ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL'S IDENTITY DATA

There’s no denying that schools need to place a high priority on the protection of their identity dataManaging that data better can only occur by understanding the realities of cyber breaches and improving your practices. Accordingly, this also means demanding the same standard of diligence from any third-party EdTech providers.

For schools who use EdTech products or services – or who are thinking about partnering with such a provider – there are many governance issues around the handling of identity data and any other sensitive information that school databases may store. The reality is that many schools are not asking enough about the safeguarding of identity data from their third-party EdTech suppliers, or just assuming that tech companies will have the appropriate practices in place.

COVIDCare – healthcare for air.

Feedback from our ISNZ customers continues to remain positive with Dr Owen Arnst from Carncot Independent School reporting:
To date, we have had only 5 covid cases in our school and I am convinced that the superior ventilation vigilance provided by the active monitoring is contributing to this. Thank you again”

Amazing results.

They are seeing an important and noticeable shift in how air care is being communicated globally. Now that the immediate health threat of COVID is abating, conversations are shifting to reflections on what other positive outcomes CO2 monitoring and managing ventilation facilitates.

Besides less absenteeism and the obvious positive learning outcomes that result, teachers are noticing sharper focus and increased engagement and productivity in their students. This is a worldwide phenomenon and remains one of the most vital pieces of information in healthcare education: indoor air health and indoor environmental quality are one of the foundations of health and wellbeing, along with diet, sleep, and exercise.

We spend 90% of our time indoors, yet we have no oversight of the environment in which we spend well over the majority of our time, whether at work, school, in the gym, in malls, or at home.

Until now.

CO2 monitoring remains one of the most effective and efficient indicators of ventilation management and virus transmission risk (hello flu season!)

And if the side effect is increased engagement and sharper focus, what’s not to love?

Their goal is to help schools have confidence in their policies.

At SchoolDocs, they support schools to focus on their core business of leading learning by partnering with them to develop and maintain comprehensive, up-to-date policies and procedures. A SchoolDocs website enables all members of a school community to access and review policies online. Their team of writers and researchers work to hone an evolving policy framework, building documentation tailored to the identity of each school. What began with a principal looking to create a more efficient policy process is now a system shared by two thirds of the schools in New Zealand.

SchoolDocs sites weave together a range of information, from the operational details of a school to its overarching values. Their online platform encourages users to find related topics, contextual information, and resource material that bolsters their documentation. We continually revise our content to ensure compliance with New Zealand legislation and Ministry of Education requirements, as well as seeking advice and best practice guidance from appropriate authorities and subject matter experts.

Their goal is to help schools have confidence in their policies. While we ensure this through a tailored document set and robust legislative grounding, they also seek review from the wider SchoolDocs community. All schools submit feedback as part of our comprehensive cyclical review. The SchoolDocs team uses this feedback, along with our own research, to ensure our policies suit the specific needs of New Zealand schools.

A challenge for the SchoolDocs team has been keeping pace with the expectations on schools over the last two years. The turbulent course of the pandemic has prompted them to review and release guidance at a speed none of us had previously experienced. Their focus continues to be on strengthening SchoolDocs as a resource for schools and their communities, and as a team, supporting schools to continue their mahi.

They welcome all enquiries about how SchoolDocs can assist your school.
