Local Salsa Maker Hopes To Dip Into Store Shelves

NEWTON—Juli Garcia, the owner of Mama Jules Salsa, wants to expand from the farmers’ markets to mom-and-pop store shelves to make her salsa a local staple of the community.

Garcia has been making her salsa for more than 20 years.

Friends and family encouraged her to sell the tasty product. After losing her job due to the pandemic, Garcia was pushed to start her salsa venture.

Midtown Standoff Prompts Questions, Answers

NEWTON—Items flew by Elinor Hurst’s window, shattering into the Midtown towers parking lot below.

Hurst said she’s hard of hearing, but there was no way for her to not notice the commotion going on above her.

On the seventh floor of Midtown Towers, resident Lyle Gulick, according to police reports and eyewitnesses, was throwing items out his window, as well as threatening to kill himself or light the building on fire.

Growing Numbers Of Seniors Turning In Food Applications

NEWTON – An increasing number of seniors are filling out applications for meals at the Grand Central Senior Center in Newton.

Executive Director Tara Goering said many of the older residents are getting pangs of déjà vu from the hardships they endured growing up. She said the numbers of applications for friendship meals under Aging Projects Inc. had shot up in just the past three or four months.

“If everyone who came who filled out applications, we would double the people in our building,” she said.

Study Ranks Harvey Country In Top 10 Generous Places In Kansas

The gift of giving pays off. According to a taxpayer study, Harvey County is ranked in the most generous places in Kansas.

The fourth-annual study released by SmartAsset records the most generous places in the United States. Among the top 10 ranked counties in Kansas, Harvey County was placed 10th in the study.

The study’s pillars for gathering data are contributions as a percentage of income and percentage of returns itemizing charitable contributions.

Longtime Voice Of The Railers Passes Away

NEWTON – Ralph Malin, the “Voice of the Railers” for more than 40 years, died last week at the age of 79.

Phil Anderson, a long time Newton sports fan, said he always expected to see Malin in the press box.

“He was softspoken but when it came to announcing, he knew what was required of him,” Anderson said.

Bin Store Discount Depot Comes To Newton

NEWTON—The owner of Discount Depot in downtown Newton, Rachel Mondt, brought a nationwide trend to town.

That trend is bin or liquidation stores, and Discount Depot, 427 N. Main, is one.

“We sell basically liquidation items that we buy from pallet stores and pallet auctions,” she said. “Everything comes in on a pallet, and then we break it down.”
