Volume 16|  3 June 2022| Roll Number 633|  Week 5 Term 2

Hi All

This week marked a significant moment for QPS which had myself and Ritchie Heap (our Board of Trustee property member) dancing around the office.

On Tuesday we both met with Ministry of Education property reps and finalised plans for the redevelopment of our school. This has been a long journey and we are excited to finally come to an agreement with the Ministry over the future development of our school. It is going to be a very exciting period moving forward as we undertake major works to replace old buildings. We welcome 10 new modular classrooms, which are to be relocated from Wakatipu High School. Attached is the proposed plan which outlines the location of these buildings. As part of this plan, ECE (early childhood education) will occupy Rooms 25 and 26 and the current junior playground.

We are excited about being able to create brand new junior and senior playgrounds and introduce all-weather Astroturf fields onto our site. There is a very tight timeframe for consultation and we would love your feedback on what types of equipment you would like to see in our new playground. Do you have any ideas of other things that can be included in our master plan moving forward?

Please complete the attached form to provide any ideas that you might have for our site.… big or small.
School re-development- click to provide feedback.

Alternatively, I welcome parents to school next week, if you would like to meet in person and provide any additional feedback I will be available Wednesday 8 June 2-4 pm, Thursday 9 June 8.30-9.30 am and on Friday 10 June 11.30-12.30pm.

Thank you to the group of 10 parents who joined me in school today and spent time in classrooms. There were lots of good discussions and it was good to be able to spend the time talking. From this session, I did encourage that if you have wonderings about what your child is doing, or have questions please make an appointment to talk to the class teacher in the first instance. Team leaders and members of the senior leadership team are also available. Our next walk around is scheduled for Friday 1 July at 11.30am.

Have a safe long weekend, and take some time to stop and look around. The snow on Remarks is amazing. We are so lucky to live where we do…..

The mahi for PB4L is progressing well.  We have received great staff and community feedback for our Draft Behaviour Matrix.  In this document, we clearly define our expectations of all students in all areas of the school.  Some of the older students have also enjoyed having input too.  Key points identified by the community:

To include hygiene, encouragement of healthy food, and respecting and celebrating that we are an inclusive school that values diversity.  These and other important points will be worked into the document.

Our next document for community review will be the flowchart that clearly outlines behaviour management processes for minor and major incidents across the school. This document has been reviewed by staff and we will be seeking community feedback at the end of week 6.

GARDEN TO TABLE

What a special morning we had yesterday for our first session of ‘Garden to Table’.

THANK YOU so much to Susan McIntrye (our QPS, GTT Queen), Nicky Grey (our second QPS, GTT Queen), Didier, Cordelia and Bryony for organising our morning. Also special thanks to our Room 22 parent helpers, Amy, Zoe, Natalja and Kate.

OUR FIRST CRITIQUE

Today I had the privilege of being chosen to taste test Room 22's Garden to Table menu.

The first thing I noticed was how beautifully presented the dish was - lots of attention to detail, with strawberries on the side and flowers in the water.

the dish lived up to its beautiful presentation and was very tasty. Alex and Amelia were highly knowledgeable about what the dish was, what grew in the garden and how the dish was cooked.

There was a lovely aroma that the dish gave off, tantalising the nose palate as well as the visual and very importantly my taste buds.

An amazing effort! Thank you for allowing me to participate in the Garden to Table project!

IMOVIE

Senior Students are learning IMovie skills. Charlie and Skylah decided to showcase our popular Spider Frame. We are very grateful for this PTA project.

Room 29 learnt about acids and bases and what happens when they mix. The result from the orange fizz experiment was a fizzy sensation in your mouth. Orange(acid) and baking soda(base) creates carbon dioxide.
Room 2 children are learning about Habitats.
Isaac and Fletcher know lots of facts about African animals.

Change to our Bus Roll System

Thanks for your patience as we work through a change in our bus roll system. This change was a HUGE mission for our admin team BUT now all bus registrations are securely stored on our Student Management System.

Please remember, if your child is registered for a certain day BUT you are collecting them then please ring the office team and let them know to remove them from the bus list for that day. If you need to PERMANENTLY change the days that your child is on the bus then please complete a new registration form (found on the website) with the updated days.

If neither of the above apply then you don't need to do anything!

ADVERSE WEATHER

We are now approaching the time of year when adverse weather, including snow and ice, can affect roads and buses and the operation of the school. Below are the two main adverse weather scenarios and the methods of communication that we will use for adverse weather.

Adverse Weather Overnight and early Morning

We will liaise with QLDC’s roading contractor and the bus coordinator and make a decision regarding any changes to the school day.

If changes are made they are likely to be:

  1. School is open as normal, however, some buses may be delayed or cancelled.

  2. School has a delayed start (usually 10am), with a compacted timetable. Buses may be delayed or cancelled.

  3. School is closed.

Please note that we liaise with all the schools in the Wakatipu Basin, and the decision to close or have a late start is coordinated by the designated representative for the school. (Conditions can vary across the basin and be different for schools).

Adverse Weather During the School Day

Please note that closing the school early is problematic for a number of reasons (notably trying to run all buses early), and we will try and run school until the normal end of day if at all possible. Accordingly, we do not want parents coming to school to collect their children unless specifically notified to do so. The likely scenarios for adverse weather events during the school day are:

a) School runs until normal time, and buses run as normal.

b) School runs until normal time, but some buses run early and/or runs are altered.

c) School closes early, with buses also running early. In some cases bus routes may be altered.

d) In an extreme adverse weather event students may be kept at school until travel is safe or even stay overnight.

Communication

We will use the following channels for communicating with parents and students about adverse weather impacts:

  • QPS App alert - please download the free QPS App and sign up for alerts.

  • Email.

  • Facebook- please follow us on facebook.

  • Radio - announcements will also be made on local radio stations.

Our primary concern is the safety of our students and this will always be paramount in our decision making. If parents are on the roads please ensure that vehicles are equipped for winter driving conditions.

Salvation Army Support

School parents and increase rent and mortgage rates
Many of you will be experiencing increased food and transport costs. Also, with mortgage interest rates on the rise, many people will have less money in their pockets. Although a lot of people do not own their own homes, the flow-on effect of mortgage interest rate rises will result in increased rents. If you are concerned about how you will afford these increased costs, you may be interested in speaking to our financial mentor. This is a free service run by The Salvation Army. Our service provides support to those struggling with their finances. We can provide skills that will improve your future financial well-being. This service is for people who wish to learn how to manage their money, keep debt under control and plan for future financial success.

If you have any parents who may need our help, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0211955534.
Thanks.

Slow Down Near School Buses

A reminder to parents/caregivers to take extra care around school bus stops. Please park on the same side as the bus stop wherever possible. But if you do need to park on the opposite side, cross to your children first instead of having them cross to you. Please never call to your child from the other side of the road – yes it does happen - and it can put children in great danger!

Parents please remember that the maximum speed when passing a stationary school bus stopped to pick up or drop off children is 20km/h regardless of which side the bus is on.  Please take extra care around school bus stops and provide supervision for children needing to cross.
