We Worship

We Gather

CALL TO WORSHIP (Call and Response)

L: The Day of Pentecost has come, and we are together. Let us face bravely into the winds of God
P: Surely God is in this place! The works of God surround us … listen … look!
L: The Spirit of God fills us with amazement. God sets us afire with wonder and awe.
P: We will sing to God as long as we live; we will celebrate the gifts of God.

PRAISE HYMN: Faithful God, You Sent Your Spirit

OPENING PRAYER (In Unison)

L: Let us worship the God who gathers us! Let us pray in his name together:
Ever living and ever loving God, we praise you for your loving presence with us.
Come, Holy Spirit, take and transform our societies—
that broken people find healing;
that lonely people find love;
that bitter people find peace;
that fearful people find hope.
Come, Holy Spirit, take our world’s leaders and governments and bring renewal—
that communication can be open;
that relationships between hostile people and hostile nations will evaporate;
that a hunger for justice addresses the hunger for food felt by so many.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill your church—
that our worship will be ever more pleasing to you;
that prayers will change our minds
instead of trying to get you to change yours;
that our lives will make a real difference to real people in the real world.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill our lives with your presence—
so that more and more every day, all that we do and say and hope
will be an act of worship to you and an expression of love to others, to the glory of your name.
Amen.

We Proclaim

PSALTER: Psalm 104:24-35 (UMH 827)

L: O Lord, how manifold are your works!
P: In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures

L: Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
P: creeping things innumerable are there,
living things both small and great.

L: There go the ships,
and Leviathan whom you formed to play in it.
P: These all look to you,
to give them their food in due season.

L: When you give it to them, they gather it;
P: when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
L: When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
P: When you take away their breath, they die
and return to their dust.

L: When you send forth your spirit, they are created;
P: and you renew the face of the ground.
L: May the glory of the Lord endure forever,
may the Lord rejoice in his works,
P: Who looks on the earth and it trembles,
who touches the mountains and they smoke!

L: I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
P: I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
L: May my meditation be pleasing to the Lord
in whom I rejoice.
P: Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
and let the wicked be no more!

L: Bless the Lord, O my soul!
P: Praise the Lord!

FAITHFUL GOD, YOU SENT YOUR SPIRIT

(Text: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette 2008, HYMN TUNE: NETTLETON)
V1: Faithful God, you sent your Spirit
Long ago at Pentecost.
You gave life and said to share it,
All as one, beneath your cross.
May we see your wondrous blessing
When your people everywhere
Serve together, all confessing
Faith that binds us, faith to share.

V2: God of hope, you daily nurture
Those who seek to follow you.
You're not bound by any culture;
You love rich and poorones, too.
In an ever changing nation,
May your churches welcome in
Every child of your creation,
Giving hope so all again.

V3: God of love, may we in worship
Welcome our diversity.
May we reach in trust and friendship
To the poor and refugee.
May we see Christ in the stranger
Breaking bonds of race and fear.
By your Spirit, may we offer
Glimpses of your kingdom here.

LIKE THE MURMUR OF THE DOVE'S SONG

(United Methodist Hymnal #544)
V1: Like the murmur of the dove's song,
Like the challenge of her flight,
Like the vigor of the wind's rush,
Like the new flame's eager might:
Come, Holy Spirit, come.

V2: To the members of Christ's body,
To the branches of the Vine,
To the church in faith assembled,
To her midst as gift and sign:
Come, Holy Spirit, come.

V3: With the healing of division,
With the ceaseless voice of prayer,
With the power to love and witness,
With the peace beyond compare:
Come, Holy Spirit, come.

WHAT FEAST OF LOVE

(Worship & Song #3170)
V1: What feast of love is offered here,
What banquet come from heaven?
What food of everlasting life,
What gracious gift is given?
This, this is Christ the king,
The bread come down from heaven.
Oh, taste and see and sing!
How sweet the manna given!

V2: What light of truth is offered here,
What covenant from heaven?
What hope of everlasting life,
What wondrous word is given?
This, this is Christ the king,
The sun come down from heaven.
Oh, taste and hear and sing!
The Word of God is given!

V3: What wine of love is offered here,
What crimson drink from heaven?
What stream of everlasting life,
What precious blood is given?
This, this is Christ the king,
The sweetest wine of heaven.
Oh, taste and see and sing,
The Son of God is given!

SWEET, SWEET SPIRIT

(United Methodist Hymnal #334)
V1: There's a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place,
And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord;
There are sweet expressions on each face,
And I know they feel the presence of the Lord.
Sweet Holy Spirit,
Sweet heavenly Dove,
Stay right here with us,
Filling us with your love;
And for these blessings
We lift our hearts in praise;
Without a doubt we'll know
That we have been revived
When we shall leave this place.

SURELY THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD

(United Methodist Hymnal #328)
V1: Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place;
I can feel his mighty power and his grace.
I can hear the brush of angels' wings,
I see glory on each face;
Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place.

SCRIPTURE READING(S)

(All scriptures are from the New Revised Standard Version - NRSV)

Genesis 11:1-9 - Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."
The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the LORD said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech."
So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
Romans 8:14-17 - For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ--if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
John 14:8-17, (25-27) - Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied."
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.
Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.
This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
"I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.
Acts 2:1-21 - When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?
Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power."
All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.
And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'

SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION

Rev. Pat Whittemore, Tennessee/Holston/Memphis Course of Study Instructor

Instructions for those worshipping with us online: Have bread and juice or an appropriate beverage ready. As we go through the service, one person in your family or gathering should emulate the actions of breaking the bread and lifting the "cup" when Rev. Val does so. While we provide individually prepared portions of the elements for in-person worshippers as a COVID safety protocol, if you are with people in your household, you can use the intinction method (tear off and had each person a bite-sized portion of the bread which they can then dip into one communal cup). As you offer them the bread, say "This is Christ's body broken for you." As you offer them the cup, say "This is Christ's blood poured out for you."

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

L: Lift up your hearts!
P:  We lift them to the Lord!
L: Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, you made us in your image, to love and be loved. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. By the suffering, death, and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you delivered us from slavery to sin and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.
     On the night in which Jesus gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
     When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
     And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.
P:  By your Spirit, God, make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever.
Amen.
L:  The Lord’s table is ready. For those worshipping here in person, please remain seated and I will bring the elements to you. For those worshipping online, you may now share the elements with one another.
