What's New at Six Feet Up

What's on Our Minds 🤔

Migrating Workflows from a Custom Framework to Airflow

Genome engineering 🧬 platforms are incredibly complex. Continuous maintenance of a custom platform was preventing a national biotechnology firm from focusing on software solutions that could push the company forward. Enter Apache Airflow. Learn how Six Feet Up developed a plan to transfer workflows from the company’s custom application framework to Airflow — an open-source tool now being used to schedule the company's manufacturing process.

What Does it Cost to Run an AWS Lambda Function 24/7?

We helped FLASH Scientific Technology move a set of long-running data ingestion processes from AWS Lambda to AWS ECS Fargate, which resulted in a better workload/platform fit and reduced costs. Read more about what it costs to run an AWS Lambda Function all day, every day — and how you can optimize your spend. 💰

5 Ways You Can Use direnv to Manage Environment Variables

If you find yourself frequently managing environment variables, especially project-specific variables, direnv can be a huge time saver. ⏰ Essentially, you define directory-specific variables in a .envrc file (or optionally .env) and those variables will be set when you enter that directory or one of its children and unset when you leave. The file is treated as a full-blown shell script, so you can add complicated logic to determine how values are set. Check out 5 ways you can use direnv.

1Password Improvements to Help Manage Secrets and Environments

The newer versions of 1Password have brought some very developer-friendly improvements including more ways to authenticate and log into the command line tool, new and improved ways to add secrets to your environments; and more options to quickly move between environments. 🙌  Explore what's new.

Projects on Deck 👷‍♀️

What's been keeping us busy this month:
  • We’re helping an automobile 🚗 financing company migrate a microservices application from Azure to GKE. Specifically, we audited their infrastructure to make sure they were using security best practices; updated access controls; and moved the microservices application from a public control plane to a private control plane with Kubernetes cluster.
  • We updated a JavaScript-based MLA Citation Maker — for both elementary and secondary students — from version 8 to 9 for the Oregon School Library Information System (OSLIS). The standards for citation output are set by the Modern Language Association.
  • A continuation of the work we have been doing with Purdue to migrate their various subsites from Zope into Plone, this project will migrate the Knowledge Base for the college’s Engineering Computer Network. The Knowledge Base is a stand-alone section of the site with its own search and categorization tags to help students and faculty find information and help topics for things such as computers, networking and websites. We will make use of the collective.taxonomy add-on for Plone to recreate the nested tagging structure currently used for the Knowledge Base in Zope.

Cal's Cool Tools 🧰

Latest cool finds from our CTO Calvin Hendryx-Parker:
  • Truly convenient SSH: Nifty features if you use the ssh Kitten to connect to remote hosts.
  • Quine.io: For data engineers and data scientists — combine the real-time performance of event stream processing with the rich query syntax of graph database technologies to detect complex event patterns across multiple data streams without time windows.
  • macOS Quick Look: Plug-ins for previewing markdown and syntax highlighting.
  • 1Password SSH agent: Use the SSH keys you have saved in 1Password to seamlessly integrate with your Git and SSH workflows.
  • pyscript.net: Create rich Python apps in the browser using HTML's interface and the power of Pyodide, WASM and modern web technologies.
