This week we're looking at our facilities opening hours, with COVID-19 continuing to impact us all; we're keen to hear your thoughts on a number of important topics; we're wrapping up last week's wild weather; and we're celebrating Arbor Day and World Environment Day!
Mā te wā – have a great week.

COVID-19 continues to impact Council services and facilities
With COVID-19 lingering in our community, we're continuing to make temporary changes to our services and facilities in response to staff needing to isolate at home.
For the most part our libraries and services centres are operating normally. We’ve had the odd occasion where we’ve been forced to close our Waikanae Library and Service Centre and Paekākāriki Library at short notice due to staff availability, but this has been the exception.
Our Ōtaki Pool will be temporarily closed on Sundays, and reduced weekend hours will remain at the Coastlands Aquatic Centre for at least the next four weeks, due to challenges with staff availability.
We know this isn't ideal but we’re being as agile as we can. Keep an eye on our website and Council Facebook pages for updates, or give us a call on 0800 486 486.

Have your say: An affordable housing entity for Kāpiti
People right across Kāpiti, on a range of incomes, are struggling to find suitable affordable housing.
We've been looking at how we can help more people access affordable housing in our district, which is a key action in our Housing Strategy 2022.
We're proposing establishing an independent community land trust (CLT) that, with Council, can partner with iwi partners, providers and other organisations to deliver affordable housing outcomes in Kāpiti.
We want your thoughts on our proposal. Consultation opens today, and runs through to 5pm Friday 8 July.

Stormwater framework to manage more water, more development
|
|
Managing growth, and responding to climate change and Te Mana o te Wai in partnership with iwi are at the heart of a revised strategic framework for managing stormwater on the Kāpiti Coast.
|
|
Council and partners Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngā Hapū o Ōtaki and Ngāti Toa, supported by technical experts, have drafted a vision, values and outcomes for managing our stormwater, which will replace the existing strategy adopted in 2008.
A lot has changed at a national, regional, and district level since the current strategy was developed, including more frequent and severe rainfall events, increased growth, and new standards that put a holistic focus on water quality. The framework aims to pull it all together.
Ahead of adoption, we’re seeking feedback on the draft vision, values and outcomes proposed by the Steering Group.

Chat to us about Maclean Park upgrades
|
|
We’ll be at the Paraparaumu Beach Market this Saturday, 11 June, to share our plans for the next round of improvements for Maclean Park.
|
|
Starting later this year, we’ll be upgrading the skatepark, building new accessible toilets and showers, and doing earthworks to prepare the space for a future older persons’ recreation area and an interactive water feature.
We’d like to hear what skatepark users want to be included in (or left out of!) their new facility.
Come and visit us this Saturday at the Paraparaumu Beach Market!

Work on the Waikanae River Bridge shared pathway
It's great to see work begin on a safer pedestrian and cycling path on the Waikanae River Bridge.
The new path, measuring 2.5 metres wide and approximately 80 metres long, is being built by Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency and is due to be completed in July.
This work will provide a safe and user-friendly asset to the community, linking the south rural area to the Waikanae town centre.
There’s a lane closure leading up to and over the bridge, to allow works to be carried out, with stop/go traffic control in place. Please take care or use an alternative route.

Marking Arbor Day and World Environment Day – 5 June
This week there's double the reasons to get out in the big outdoors and plant some trees, with two big days marked on 5 June.
Arbor Day was first observed in Aotearoa New Zealand in Greytown in 1890. Over 130 years later, our focus is on ecological restoration projects, using native plants to restore damaged or destroyed habitats.
World Environment Day is the United Nations’ day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.
To mark these days, last Friday 150 tamariki from schools in Waikanae planted 2000 trees in one day! Council staff work with local schools every year to plant at Pharazyn Reserve, helping tamariki take ownership of their environment and create a space they can visit for years to come.

Coastal Advisory Panel wants to meet you!
|
|
Do you have a view on how we should manage coastal hazards like erosion or flooding from sea-level rise?
|
|
Community involvement in this work is crucial so we can develop responses that are enduring.
Members of the Takutai Kāpiti Coastal Advisory Panel are out and about at markets, libraries and community board meetings in June and July, and they want to hear from you. Stop by and have a chat. Tell them what thoughts or concerns you have about coastal hazards, and how you'd like them to represent your views.

Last week’s wild weather kept our crews busy cleaning up, but overall Kāpiti’s infrastructure held up well.
|
|
King Arthur Drive in Otaihanga was closed for part of the day due to fallen trees that took some time to clear. We also responded to property damage from a tornado type event in Waikanae Beach.
Heavy swells have caused minor damage to seawalls along our coast, which will be addressed in the coming weeks.
Significant weather events are becoming more frequent and can have a big impact on our resources and our infrastructure. We’re here to help so if you need it, please get in touch using the Antenno app, making an online request for service, or by phoning 0800 486 486.
