Dear <<First Name>>,

Earlier this week, my office celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day! This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. In honour of the Indigenous community in BC, our government has committed $34.75 million to The First Peoples' Cultural Council for Indigenous cultural reclamation & revitalization. While huge progress has been made on reconciliation in BC, we will continue working together toward a brighter future.

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:
Celebrating Pride

June is Pride month!

Our government is working hard to advance the rights and freedoms of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. That’s why we took action to ensure the spectrum of gender identity is included on B.C. government ID, or why we ensured that people can change their gender designations on their BC Services Card, BC Driver’s Licence and BCID without the confirmation of a physician or psychologist. It’s why we moved to ensure publicly funded, affirming lower surgeries are available in B.C., and why we expanded coverage of preventative treatment for people at risk of contracting HIV. These are just some of the steps we’ve taken to build a B.C. where people are truly free to be who they are.

I am proud of all the British Columbians who stand together as friends and allies against hate. This year, B.C. communities like Armstrong, 100 Mile House, Vanderhoof, and Lillooet are hosting Pride parades for the first time ever, showing that more people are feeling comfortable and safe to be who they are.

B.C. expecting first hot stretch of summer

British Columbians should take precautions this weekend, as Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the first hot stretch of the summer for most regions in B.C. It is important that people keep themselves and others safe during warmer than average temperatures.

The Province released an Extreme Heat Preparedness Guide to help people prepare for extreme heat and share tips on how to stay safe: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-management/preparedbc/know-your-hazards/severe-weather/extreme-heat.

B.C. strengthens actions to prepare for climate change with new strategy

British Columbia is on the front lines of the climate crisis – we’ve seen first-hand the impacts of record heatwaves, wildfires, flooding and droughts. We’re taking action through the Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy to build a better, more resilient future for people and communities across the province.

Expansion of $10 a day child care to benefit thousands more B.C. families

Applications are being accepted from child care providers to join the $10 a Day ChildCareBC program this year, which will enable them to offer low-cost child care, making life more affordable for thousands more families in B.C. Applications will now be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis, based on priority criteria, allowing some sites to offer $10 a day spaces sooner than December 2022.

Since 2018, the Province has invested $2.7 billion in the 10-year ChildCareBC plan to build a future where affordable, inclusive and quality child care is a core service that families can rely on.
