Prescription Drug
Take-Back Events

April 2022

Murfreesboro Medical Center, TrustPoint Hospital, Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford, MTSU's Campus Pharmacy, Murfreesboro Police Department, Smyrna Police Department, MTSU Police, and the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office are just a few of the agencies involved in the drug takeback events during April. Coalition members collected more than 430 lbs. of unused medication at the April events!

Drug take back events serve three important public health and safety purposes. Proper
disposal of unused medication prevents diversion of prescription drugs with potential
for abuse. According to the DEA, non-medical use of prescriptions drugs is the second most common form of drug abuse in the United States. Secondly, unused medication in the home can pose a risk to young children who might accidently ingest the medication.  Lastly, properly disposing of unused medication protects our environment. The next Drug Take-Back Event will be in October 2022.

TENNESSEE TEEN INSTITUE

In June with funding from the Tennessee Highway Safety Office, PC4S staff took a team to the Tennessee Teen Institute at UT Martin.

Students from Rutherford County joined 450 youth leaders from across the state at the Tennessee Teen Institute. The Tennessee Teen Institute is a five-day youth leadership and prevention camp sponsored by the Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (JACOA). This year marked the 37th year of the Teen Institute Program in Tennessee. The program addresses teen issues such as bullying, violence, suicide, teen pregnancy, distracted driving, teen health, and substance abuse prevention through a five-day, peer-led prevention camp designed to provide teen participants with the skills and education necessary to develop and implement alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs in their own communities.

Be on the look out for some amazing things to come!
Thank you to the Boys & Girls Club of Rutherford County for supporting youth and their families!

On June 15, PC4S partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to host the Tennessee National Guard Counterdrug Taskforce's Stashed Away Trailer. The purpose of this event is to educate parents and caregivers about dangers of substance misuse and to promote healthy communication practices. Only 56% of Rutherford County parents talk with their children about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Events like Stashed Away open the door for these important conversations.

The Rutherford Recovery Fest committee, Project Lifeline, and the Faith Based Regional Coordinator programs are busy planning for the 6th annual event! This year's event will be at Family Worship Center - a recovery friendly congregation. Join us on September 17th to break the stigma! There will be music, guest speakers, kids activities, food, and local resources. Special thanks to this year's event chair, Jolie Shipley! Jolie led the committee in the development of a mission statement:

Educate the public on mental health and substance use disorders in order to end the stigma and foster meaningful conversations,
Equip the community through educational resources and providing a platform to share our experiences, and
Expand our influence through community outreach.
