Dear <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>,

In this ECRR's eNewsletter a variety of announcements of news items and events is presented. Not all announcements are really new, but they are still more than worthwhile to be mentioned again, like for example the call for applications for the European Riverprize 2022. But the high-quality publication on freshwater fish biodiversity restoration is real news. For more information on other events than mentioned, we recommend to connect with the ECRR, website's  event calendar.

We wish you a good read and we welcome your reactions through secretariat@ecrr.org.

NEWS

Applications for the 2022 European Riverprize are now open.

European Riverprize 2022
First awarded in 2013, the European Riverprize celebrates excellence in the management, conservation and development of Europe's rivers, wetlands and surrounding communities. From 2021, the emphasis of the International RiverFoundation shifted to building community and river resilience rather than just recovery. The International RiverFoundation is encouraging applications that reflect a journey towards the resilience of the rivers.

Previous winners of the European Riverprize include the Rhine River (2013), Mur River (2014) and the Segura River (2016).

The winner will be announced at the Gala Dinner in Vienna's City Hall, on 29th November featured by the International River Riversymposium 28 - 30 November in Vienna, Austria.

Stage 1 applications are due Friday 15th July 2022.

PUBLICATIONS

Freshwater fish biodiversity restoration in floodplain rivers requires connectivity and habitat heterogeneity at multiple spatial scales.

The publication presents a comprehensive study of the functioning for fishes of 46 river restoration projects in the river Rhine, one of the world's most heavily engineered lowland rivers. Clearly, there is no one-sizefits-all design for river restoration projects. Whether a river section is free-flowing or impounded dictates the scope and efficacy of restoration projects and, within a river section, multiple complementary restoration projects might be key to mitigate freshwater fish biodiversity loss. An essential element for success is that these projects should retain permanent lateral connection to the main channel

Highlights
• Fish recruitment and habitat conditions are studied in 46 river restoration projects.
• Flow conditions and lateral connectivity are essential for young riverine fishes.
• Multiple spatial scales of habitat heterogeneity affect both abundance and diversity.
• There is no one-size-fits-all design to restore large rivers for fishes.
• River restoration projects should be complementary to serve the entire fish community.

European Rivers Summit 2022

ERS aims to inspire a movement of connected citizens in Europe to protect and restore European rivers, fight new dams and remove obsolete barriers. Healthy rivers are essential to delivering the European Green Deal and we aim to connect river champions around Europe to policy-makers in Brussels, with a two-day conference plus a third day to visit a river restoration site.

The event will inform attendees on the most important policy issues, big ideas and latest science around healthy rivers, and engage directly with Brussels as the home of the European Commission and Parliament in defending healthy rivers for people across Europe. We will also explore the power of communicating about rivers in film and art and see the transformative power of restoring urban rivers.

Large Wood for Living Rivers

Technics and results

TH2O Lyon, the US Forest Service, Rijkswaterstaat from Netherlands, European Centre for River Restoration and The World Fish Migration Foundation invite you to save the date and register for an exciting upcoming webinar taking place on 20th September, 2022 from 17:00-19:00 (French time).

The webinar is entitled: LARGE WOOD FOR LIVING RIVERS!
Technics for renaturing rivers with large wood: feedback from abroad on the effects measured and the methods of implementation.
We invite all river and restoration practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and students to join!

This is a free, international webinar which will highlight the need and opportunities to improve habitat in rivers and channels to enhance the aquatic biodiversity across Europe! It would be in english with French translation😃

 Confirmed speakers include:
  • Robert Gubernick from USDA forest would begin by a summary of scientific interest of the technics and presents application of the different technics by USDA forest (in reference to the manual made by USDA on large wood river restoration) max 40 minutes + 20 min questions
  • Margriet Schoor from Rijkswaterstaat, state navigation services in Holland, will complete with technics used in navigated channels and scientific measured effect – 20 minutes + 10 min questions
  • Mickael Moore who worked with the company Biohabitats  and which is now in France will make a testimony as project manager of realisations managed by biohabitat – 20 minutes + 10 min questions
