Celebrating 175th Anniversary of the Diocese of Melbourne

It was a desire to consecrate a bishop that saw Melbourne named a cathedral city on 25 June 1847, by Letters Patent from Queen Victoria. Four days later, evangelical Charles Perry was consecrated.

Six months later, he arrived in Melbourne itself. The town’s settlement by Europeans dated from just 12 years earlier. For tens of thousands of years, the area had been home to the people of the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation

As the Diocese of Melbourne prepares to mark 175 years, The Melbourne Anglican spoke with Archbishop Philip Freier about the diocese's milestones, the future, and how we’re handling some of our biggest challenges and issues.

Join us for a special Provincial Choral Evensong this Sunday at 4pm, with choirs from St Paul's Cathedral, St Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral and other Provincial Cathedrals.

"What a joyous occasion it is to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of Melbourne’s Anglican and Roman Catholic dioceses on Sunday at St Paul’s Cathedral, such a dignified and reassuring presence in the centre of our city. I also look forward to the musical ministry of St Paul’s choirs, augmented by singers from Victoria’s Anglican cathedrals, and our Roman Catholic colleagues from St Patrick’s Cathedral. I welcome the participation of Catholic Archbishop Peter Commensoli, plus Victoria’s Anglican provincial bishops."

Pray with us

The World
We give thanks for the work of international organizations, the United Nations, the World Health Organisation and the many aid agencies whose members work in such difficult circumstances to bring relief to people in many countries of the world where life’s circumstances become impossible. In so many circumstances, we pray but otherwise we are usually unable to help directly. At this time, we pray for Afghanistan, both for its peace and recovery of human rights, but particularly for recovery from the recent earthquake, its worst in 20 years, asking God to comfort those whose relatives and community members have been killed, the injured and people whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. We pray for international assistance requested by Afghanistan, and much needed because many agencies withdraw when the Taliban assumed power. Worldwide, we continue to pray for the plight of refugees, as the UN estimates that 100 million are now forcibly displaced, including Ukrainians. We give thanks for the work of the World Health Organisation which has responded to an urgent concern with numerous outbreaks of polio in Africa by mass vaccination campaigns of children across five countries. We pray for the work of Amnesty International with their raising of concerns of the UK’s plan to send people seeking asylum to Rwanda where concerns have already been raised over their human rights record. We pray for the work of the World Food Programme (WFP) as they attempt to respond to the needs of 30% of people in Sudan facing acute food shortages and rising global food prices.
