Matariki

E te whanau o Te Ngākau Tapu, he mihi kia koutou katoa a tēnei wa o te Matariki

Thank you to the extended whanau of SHC for the support of our annual Matariki Dinner last Saturday. A lovely evening to start the many Matariki celebrations that are happening at the moment. The students and many guests enjoyed the opportunity to be with friends, share a delicious meal and soak in the wairua that was present. The auctions were a great success but the highlights were many. The moving Memorial tribute to the fallen was a favourite. Thank you once again for attending. View the photos here.

Music Institute Concert

Thank you to all those who attended our first Music Institute Concert on Tuesday evening. We were extremely proud to have our young musicians play to a full crowd of supportive friends and family. It was fantastic to see the talent developing through the College from Year 7. We look forward to seeing more of these performances in the future.

Walter Kirby - Thursday 30 June

Walter Kirby is our annual Sacred Heart College music competition, and this year is our 86th year! Tickets are available via our website, and also at the door. Adults $10, children and students free. Doors open at 5.30pm, show starts at 6.30pm. Food and refreshments are available from 5.30pm and during interval - cash only.

Musical Instruments - donations appreciated

If you have any musical instruments at home that are not being used, the College would be very grateful for your donation. Examples of instruments needed are trumpets, saxophones, violins, guitars, and flutes. This would allow more access to music for our students and reduce the cost to the school of hiring them, while also enhancing our music programme. Please bring them to our Main Office. Thank you in advance.

Pastoral Care and Student Services

Formal Uniform Days

Please note that these are typically Mondays and Fridays, and on special occasions. All students are expected to wear their formal white shirt and the school tie. Please note the expectation is that Year 11-13 students wear their blazers on such days.

Uniform/Hair and Grooming

Thank you for your continued support in this regard. As the colder weather is upon us, the regulation school jersey, jacket and scarf are to be worn for warmth. Please note that students are not to wear sports jackets or supporters hoodies with their school uniform. These are for training or match purposes only. Students are regularly reminded of our expectations that their uniform is to be worn with pride. This also includes being well groomed and clean-shaven. All shoes worn (not sandals) should be school black leather lace-ups. No chewing gum is to be brought into school. Should you have any questions or require support in this regard, please contact your sons Dean, Mrs Purcell Deputy Headmaster or Mr Knight Assistant Headmaster.

Uniform Donations

Donations of second-hand uniforms are most appreciated by our students and families in need. Should your son have either outgrown his winter uniform or left the College, our Pastoral team would welcome donations of uniform that is surplus to your requirements. Items of winter uniform would be very much appreciated - shirts, long trousers, jerseys or jackets. Please either deliver to Mrs Kelly Jennings at the Uniform Shop or to the Main Office.

Lateness

All students are expected to be at school by the 8.40am warning bell. We have a number of students who are currently pushing this timeframe. Please note that students regularly late to school without a justified explanation will be required to catch up; alternatively, we would encourage an earlier bus or train to be caught where practicable.

Board games, War games and Dungeons & Dragons

Any students interested in taking part in any of these activities at lunchtime or after school please contact Mr van Ansem, Dr Davies or Mr de Vos. You are also welcome to come to the library at lunchtime or after school on Mondays for more information.

Sweet Success in Sunny Nelson
Last weekend 26 Sacred boys travelled down to take part in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships. Our Year 9 team, Henry Moore, Cormac Pepper and Vin Marsden ran well over the 3km course - all with times under 12 minutes on a heavy muddy course. In the Junior Boys 4km race, newcomer Vin O’Connell led Charlie RichardsonBlake Taylor, George Fraser, Kaleb Rawiri and Oliver Palmer rounded out the top 6 finishes and the boys took the BRONZE medal in the teams event. A fantastic national achievement to be the 3rd best school in the country for their age group!
For our Senior boys - Zach O’Dwyer crossed the line in 10th place overall. A massive achievement in Cross Country running - and one that has earned him selection to the New Zealand Secondary Schools team. Leo Hilton, Ryan Peck and Matthew Foley also ran very good times with and Thomas Dufty and Isaac Qereqeretabua rounding out the top-six.
12 Sacred Boys were selected to represent Auckland in the Inter-Provincial relays on Sunday. International Department

We welcome new International Students at Sacred Heart

After two and half years of border closure, our first two International Students Fredrick Hennings, from Fiji, and Ryan Leung from Hong Kong, have arrived from overseas and started their new educational journey at Sacred Heart. Both boys are Year 12 boarders, and among 5000 students belonging to the Cohort 4 group, who were approved by the New Zealand government to enter Aoteroa before the full opening of border.  The International Department is thrilled to see the return of our students, and expects more students from this group to arrive in the next month and start in Term 3. They will be coming from Samoa, South Korea, China and Hong Kong. A huge thank you to teachers and hostel staff who have made two boys feel at home.

Headmaster Mr Walsh met Fredrick in his office and extended to him a very warm SHC welcome. The pair had a very nice chat about his first few days at school and hostel. Mr Walsh praised Fredrick and his family for their commitment and trust in the College. He wished him all the very best for the rest of the year and encouraged Fredick to work hard, pursue his goal, and perform to his best ability.

Youth Mass - St Ignatius Church

These days when every issue is talked about openly by our teens and on social media, it can be hard to find the Church’s voice. St Ignatius Church is holding a monthly mass especially for Years 9-13 teenagers, who are grappling with many issues and are on their own faith journeys, and Fr John Dunn is talking with teenagers on any topics they’d like to discuss. This month’s mass is 5pm Sunday 26 June at St Ignatius, 12 Kotiri Street, St Heliers, followed by a free sausage sizzle and social time (pick up around 7pm). All welcome.
