Taylor's Golden Age
50 Year Old Tawny Port

Taylor's have been masters of the aged Tawny style for many years and have long proceed a 10, 20, 30 and 40 year old. The release of a 50 year old has only just become possible, thanks to the recent introduction of a new category by the Douro and Port Wine Institute (IVDP). Not many Port shippers have the reserve stocks to call on but Taylor's is renowned for its extensive holdings of aged wines in cask.

Blended from rare wood-aged ports matured for five decades in oak casks, Taylor's Golden Age is a special collector's edition port released in very limited quantities. This 50-year-old Tawny was sourced in the eastern reaches of the Douro Valley, location of many of the finest vineyard estates and traditional source of the most long-lasting wines. Prior to blending, the individual wines were aged in Taylor's cellars in seasoned oak casks specially selected and set aside by the firm's team of expert coopers. After half a century in cask, this exceptional wine has reached its 'Golden Age' of maturity, the point at which it achieves perfect balance, a magical complexity and a seductive smoothness and density.

The nose is like concentrated fruitcake, with an abundance of candied peal, cherry, and nuts, overlaid by beeswax, coffee bean, vanilla pod, banana chip and rosewater. Delightfully lifted and floral, this is one of the most elegant aged Tawnies I’ve had yet. The alcohol is finely balanced and allows the intoxicating aromatics to come to the fore. On the palate, this is a supple and sprightly 50-year-old. Gracefully harmonious and effortlessly complete. The ripe core is succulent and generous, offering fresh bright and juicy strawberry, raspberry and cherry that belie the wine’s age. Make no mistake though, there is no shortage of complexity and maturity here. The extended finish is nothing short of decadent in its unctuosity and vibrancy.
