Dear friends,
Sending you greetings with this gorgeous greening around us!
We made it through the winter- and summer is soon upon us~ let us sing her in!
Wishing you all a blessed season with fresh opportunities and community connections.
May peace reign in Ukraine and the attackers vanish like dew on grass in the hot summer sun!
May we continue to fortify ourselves and work joyfully "behind the plow" of our beloved lands, joining together to cultivate cultures that sustain and enrich us!
~Bozena Hrycyna

Kosa Early Summer Singing Sessions - 4 Thursdays in May/June

Rusalia and Kupalo are ancient holidays connected to the beginning of summer (Green Holidays Zeleni Sviata) and the summer solstice (Ivana Kupala) in Ukraine, analogous to the seasonal festivals across Europe.
Join us for a series of classes where we explore the ritual songs of the early summer cycle-- the vocal techniques, the harmonies, as well as the context of the rituals accompanying them.
These ritual songs, are thought to represent some of the most archaic layers of Ukrainian vocal polyphony. The songs use a combination of vocal style and dense harmonies that make the supernatural accessible. Come learn to sing them!

(read more of the cultural context on the facebook event)

Location: Belarusian Orthodox Church, 524 St Clarens Ave, Toronto.
Dates: Thursdays on May 18th, 25th, June 1st and 8th.
Time: 7-9pm
Suggested donation: $25-$35 per session*
All funds go directly to the costs of organizing the event.
* We highly recommend you commit to all four weeks of workshop, with the hope that you can join us in a Kupalo celebration!
All are welcome. No need to speak Ukrainian. Experience with some singing will be an asset.

SUMMER CAMP!

I know so many have been eagerly awaiting a dates announcement and registration launch- I'm sorry we haven't provided any news until now!
We've decided to not hold a weeklong camp this summer.... (I know I know! it's disappointing for sure!)

BUT
w
e made this decision so that we can have more time and energy to work towards creating a longer term vision and more sustainable summer camp going forward.
At present, we don't feel we have the capacity to run camp and run the organization (most of the camp directors are also on the FCC board). We need to prioritize growing/building a dedicated team for the organization and camp. That means: getting more people involved!
In lieu of summer camp, we will spend the week in an organizers' retreat, and inviting longterm folk campers and friends to a weekend feast and zabava (with overnight camping option) August 26th.
(More information forthcoming.)

We are seeking out community members/ folks who have a stake in this organization and its offerings, to discuss Folk Camp’s future on Friday Aug 25, and help set up the feast on Saturday.
We are also looking for volunteers to be part of the feast & zabava committee.

If this is you- please reach out to us by email. We will share more details in the coming weeks.

p.s. We will resend this in a separate newsletter in longer format- please check that for more details! <3
