Hello and Welcome to Shrubland Nurseries latest Newsletter

The nursery is at last starting to come together, there will be lots of plants available to browse online and at the nursery next year, including in our brand new polytunnel. Opening times are variable, but you can check our opening days or ring Gill on 07890 527744 to see when we are open.

Just in...

A range of bare root and 'liners' (9 cm pots)  perennials, all cottage garden favourites and 'good doers'. Buy 3 or more of any of these and get 10% off (making most of them £3.15 each, so very good value). Some of the bare root plants can be split to make 2 or 3 plants too. Locally grown and excellent quality. Orders containing plants from just these 2 categories can be shipped on a 2 - 5 day service from just  £6.00.

We still have some odds and ends of plants left due to re-organisation of the nursery, what we will fashionably call 'wonky' plants, mostly shrubs and trees.  These are too good to throw away, but due to time constraints, we need to find new homes for them . With some care they should make fine plants for your garden. They are therefore cheap!  These, plus our remaining fruit trees, ornamental trees and shrubs are all 50% off and will be available until until they're gone.

Kings Seeds

We still have a good range of vegetable and some flower seeds left, all half price so a great opportunity to stock up for next year.

Books

I'm selling some of my gardening books, most are in good condition and make ideal gifts.

Gift Vouchers

We are in the process of setting up electronic Gift Vouchers, if you're interested and  don't see them appear on our website let me know

Looking forward to next year

Our third polytunnel (24ft x 48ft!) should be up and running in the spring, this will be open for the browsing (and buying) of our tender, exotic, half-hardy and conservatory plants, on which we will be concentrating from now on. I've been taking a  lot of cuttings, so hopefully we'll have lots to choose from next year.
There will be a range of perennials for sale at the nursery too, but to make stock control easier I probably won't be putting these on the web site. Our aim is to concentrate more on the half-hardys and exotics, these will mostly be in 9 cm pots for you to grow on, to make best use of the available space at the nursery, make packing easier and hopefully (see below) set up a fairer delivery charge.

Delivery Charges

We're holding our £8.50 mainland and lowland courier price for the foreseeable future (we're currently providing this at cost, or slightly under) but may have to revise this in the spring. We're aware that is is quite a lot for a small order, so we're going to trial an option for a cheaper 'Light Weight Small Order' service. If you're ordering just a few plants (4 or 5) small 9 cm pot size plants and if it's feasible for us to get them in a Royal Mail small parcel (under 2 kg) the cost will be £6 . This will take me a week or two to set up, in the meantime if you wish to order just a few plants, mostly exotics and succulents, we'll refund you the difference.

Paper Catalogue

I'm preparing a free no frills basic paper catalogue of our half-hardy, succulents, exotics etc. (no pictures or prices) which should contain most of the plants which I think we'll have for sale next year. Many are hidden from view until they are available on our web site, and some may never even get put on, so this is a means of showing you round the range of plants we are growing. If you're interested please send me your address.

Winter Worries

With forecast low temperatures and concerns over the cost of heating greenhouses and polytunnels, here are a few tips. A lot will depend of course on where you live, what space you have under cover and the particular microclimate of your garden.

  • If you don't have space under cover, a lot of half-hardys can be tucked under a hedge if you have one, or collected together against a sheltered wall and covered with layers of horticultural fleece, or dry leaves if you have them. Plants such as Plumbago, Solanum rantonnettii have survived in our Suffolk garden under a hedge, so far! If you can get the heavier weight (30 gms per square metre) this lasts a lot longer then bubble film and doesn't cause as much condensation. I've found the bubble film we purchased 2 years ago has already disintegrated, whereas fleece bought years ago is still going strong.
  • We operate a soil warming cable, controlled by a smart wifi switched thermostat (e.g. SONOFF THR3) which can be checked and adjusted remotely. It's great to be able to sit by the fire at home and tweak the temperature! You do need a bit of electrical knowledge to set them up. Old fashioned thermostats with a dial are not very accurate and can end up wasting a lot of electricity, and necessitate you going out in the cold to check them. Many greenhouse heaters have built in thermostats which have the same problem, it's better to operate a heater on a smart switch,
  • Be aware that a long lasting moderate frost can eventually penetrate sheds and garages
  • A long lasting minus 1 can do more damage than a short sharp harder frost.
  • We use neodymium magnets to attach fleece to polytunnel hoops - they work a treat but do be very careful, they are extremely powerful for their size, can cause injury to fingers if caught between them,  and must definitely be kept away from children.
  • We run a just about frost free unheated polytunnel, with fleece in the roof, backed up with layers of fleece laid directly over the plants. The plants in here are mostly able to take a touch of frost and are kept as dry as possible.
  • With very tender plants there is the option to bring them indoors, perhaps using supplementary led lighting. We have pots full of cuttings under lights in our kitchen doing fine.
Don't forget we're always on hand for any questions you may have. Just visit our website www.shrublands.co.uk email us info@shrublands.co.uk or ring us on 01473 657012 or 07890 527744
