Hi everyone The Scottish Government is currently consulting on whether to introduce mandatory calories labelling in ‘Out of Home’ (OOH) settings – including in cafes, restaurants, takeaways, food delivery services, and businesses in the public sector such as food provided for staff and visitors in adult care and health settings. At VOX Scotland, we are keen to hear the views of you, our members, to shape our response to this consultation. In particular, we would like to hear your perspectives on the mental health impacts, if any, you think this policy may have. Have your say in our short survey

The Scottish Government’s plan to introduce calorie labelling in OOH settings is part of a broader public health strategy, claiming that ‘giving people more information, such as the number of calories in meals will enable people to make healthier choices when eating out, or ordering in’. However, calorie labelling in these settings was recently introduced in England in April, and faced significant opposition from the UK’s leading eating disorder charity, Beat, who stated ‘there’s very little evidence that calorie-labelling helps you get healthier. But the research does show that it harms people with eating disorders. Beat are currently campaigning against the introduction of this policy in Scotland.

To have your say on VOX Scotland’s consultation response, please complete this short survey by Wednesday 28th June at 5pm.

If you have any further thoughts, you are also welcome to email us directly by this date on lmacleod@mentalhealth.org.uk. You can also complete an individual submission directly to the consultation if you would like by following this link.
