This Week @ The Homeless Coalition

Watch: https://www.facebook.com/NationalCoalitionfortheHomeless/videos/535279258204831

This Congressional Briefing acts as a civil society “call to action” for Congress to take much needed federal legislative action to solve the homeless and affordable housing crisis. We must move beyond Tent cities, hotels, homeless shelters, cars, and couch surfing to a comprehensive and permanent solution to homelessness. Solutions must be based on proven best practices and affirm housing as a human and civil right; not a privilege. This can not be done without the passage of effective federal legislation with all deliberate speed.
For tens of thousands of people each year, homelessness is not a choice, but the result of structural barriers to affordable housing; including unemployment, low wages, insufficient safety net, health issues, barriers to private market housing, and the lack of federal investment in low-cost housing. Far too many women, children, families, teenagers, veterans, people with disabilities, and senior citizens are needlessly suffering. We will not become a moral nation unless housing is a human right for all.
At the Briefing, you will hear from Members of Congress who have introduced federal legislation that addresses the homelessness emergency, and nationally renowned end homelessness advocates and policy experts. The Bring America Home Now Campaign (BAHN) supports the immediate passage of Representative Maxine Waters’ Ending Homelessness Act H.R 4496, and the repeal of the Faircloth Amendment, which bans all new federal funding for public housing. BAHN also supports universal health-care, and jobs for all federal legislation. We look forward to seeing you at this very important Congressional Briefing!

80% AMI is NOT AFFORDABLE.
"Workforce Housing" is NOT AFFORDABLE.
60% AMI or LESS is AFFORDABLE.

But, even that only tells part of the story. Learn more by booking an Affordable Housing 201 training for your organization or group: https://cincihomeless.org/2021/11/08/training-opportunities/
Please share so we can clear up this confusion!

Image Text:
Affordable housing is 60% AMI or less, anything else is Market Rate.
Affordable housing can be defined by how much a household pays for housing costs, in relation to their income.
Affordable simply means that a household pays no more than 30% of their income for housing, including utilities.
However, a better indicator of affordable housing is how many people in an area could afford rent and utilities - meaning that how many local households could live in a unit by paying 30% or their income or less. 100% AMI represents half of all residents. 60% AMI means that 60% of half of residents can afford a unit. This is how affordability is defined federally and by most communities...
However, using AMI for a neighborhood, city, racial demographics, or region vary greatly. Using the most local AMI is essential for housing equity.
Sign up for Affordable Housing 201 to learn more.
Graph shows 60% AMI by monthly housing costs: West End (neighborhood in Cincinnati): $219; Black City: $364; White City: $862; City Total: $578; and Metro Area (HUD): $1220.

Juneteenth marks the day that the last enslaved Texans, after 2 years of emancipation, learned of their freedom on June 19, 1865. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. #Juneteenth
Sylvester and Brian are proud to have recently opened bank accounts. When you're homeless, that means no home address and often no driver's license or other identification, which means you can't open up a bank account.
The Potter Stewart Inn of Court recently honored Legal Aid with the Andrew Dennison Courageous Advocate Award. This award recognizes an attorney or organization who "upholds the professional obligation to represent the poor, the unpopular or the friendless."
Mary Asbury, Legal Aid executive director, accepted the award on Legal Aid’s behalf. Legal Aid Managing Attorneys, Elaine Fink and Stephanie Moes, who delivered the keynote remarks, accompanied her. Chief Magistrate Judge Karen L. Litkovitz, United States District Court of the Southern District of Ohio and President of the Potter Stewart Inn of Court, and Terence R. Coates, the Executive Director are pictured with Ms. Asbury. Ms. Moes and Ms. Fink are pictured speaking.

Whose is this day to celebrate?
Now that Juneteenth is a national holiday, jubilee is at the forefront. Yet, today there are more African American men in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850. As a majority white community, we’re committing to study coupled with action, on Juneteenth and all year long.
We’ve created a series of nineteen emails featuring Black activists, artists, leaders, and more. Over the next nineteen days, you’ll receive challenging content and context each day. And, we’ll be in touch occasionally after these nineteen days, too; because learning isn’t finite, and because action is imperative.
We hope that you’ll join us —and spread the word— as we seek justice together: https://ophope.org/juneteenth/
Mike Maloney with the UACC Research Committee teamed up with DAAP student Kayla Brandt to create a comprehensive report on Cincinnati's Western Riverfront Neighborhoods. Maloney has been reporting on Cincinnati's historically Appalachian neighborhoods since the 1970s. This study details the demographics, economic, and social makeup of Sedamsville, Riverside, and Sayler Park based on current US Census data and the American Community Survey. This week, we launched our newest station Messer at W Court in the southern part of the West End. The Station is sponsored by our friends at Messer Construction Co. This is a pic of Messer President and CEO Tim Steigerwald getting interviewed about why Messer thought it was important to help bring this station to the West End.
We launched the station during the Juneteenth Parade, which was also on West Court St. And we had some fun friends ride Red Bikes in the parade.
