Too often we are trying to juggle multiple things at one time.

Whether you are talking on the phone while checking emails and fussing at kids. Maybe you are even one of those people that find yourself scrolling on social media while on the toilet or at a restaurant. Whatever the situation, we have at some point been distracted by trying to do too many things at once. You may even call it multi-tasking!

Multi-tasking will not help you get more things done! The myth of multitasking is that you can do multiple things at once to be more productive and save time. Our brains were not created to give 100% attention to more than one thing at a time! The result is that something will be missed, forgotten or the ball dropped in a particular area while trying to multitask. Multi-taskers often have a multitude of tabs opened on the computer all in the name of efficiency. The open tabs not only slow your computer system down but also slow you down, which will actually cause you to be less efficient.

If you have a busy day ahead of you, create a list of what needs to be done. Prioritize them, by due dates and necessity. Get the quick things out the way first, focusing on one task at a time (or use some other priority management system). You will soon see that you have fewer errors and more time to do other things on your list. You will also have more time to do less tasking and be fully present at the moment while sitting at the lakefront, taking a walk, or enjoying a meal.  Think back to the last time that you put your phone in “do not disturb” mode and were fully submerged in a conversation?

TIPS ON HOW TO BE FULLY IN THE MOMENT

1.)Put your phone on “do not disturb” mode

2.) Really listen during conversations not just respond but understand what’s being said

3.) Go to dinner or the movies by yourself

4.) Take a nap

5.) Read a book

6.) Watch a movie

7.) STOP convincing yourself that you are multitasking

8.) Don’t check emails or social media while out to dinner, engaging in conversation, or watching a movie - give yourself to the moment!

Remember: How can you say you want to enjoy life when you are not even present the majority of the time.
