Landscape Updates

The Brazilian Pepper street trees, along Sombra and Tranquilo, were trimmed in May.  Several years ago the landscape committee established a program of selective trimming of these trees in lieu of trimming every tree. Selective trimming reduces the stress on these aging trees and saves the community thousands of dollars a year.  This year only 21 trees were trimmed.

A large section of the Main Greenbelt slope was being over-taken by weeds as well as children riding their bikes down the slope damaging the plants.  The weeds have been removed and 180 Tecomaria (Cape Honeysuckle) plants installed. NOTE:  We encourage homeowners to speak to their children about staying off the slopes to protect our landscaping.

Another embankment in the Main Greenbelt is being refurbished near Calle Vecindad.  The plant material in this area needed to be replaced and the area is now ready for planting.  The Landscape Committee is working with Harvest to plant this area with California native plants as an experiment to improve drought tolerance while maintaining an attractive landscape.

Harvest is continuing to replace dead and missing trees under warranty.  Harvest has added an extra Strawberry tree that will be planted near the clubhouse pool.  Once established, this tree is expected to be stunning addition to the landscape in this area.

The large grass areas throughout the community have been treated with herbicide to kill the weeds.  In addition, every section of grass has been aerated to create openings in the turf and allow essential water and air down into the soil.

Magnolia trees throughout the community have been treated with an insecticide to irradicate the Scale insect.
Great Scott Tree Care has completed trimming 45 trees throughout the community in June. This includes Palm, Tipuana, Carrotwood, Oak, California Pepper, Podocarpus, Chinese Elm, Ficus, African Sumac, Mulberry, Brazilian Pepper, and Chinese Elm.

Special recognition goes out to Dave Hart, Mike Davison, Patty Cheah and Jay Cost for removing volunteer trees growing from stumps of trees cut down years ago on the back Amapola slope.  With chain saws, axes, and Mike’s special billhook machete, they went up and down the slope selectively removing new tree trunks which would never become viable trees.  This extra effort saved the community over $3,000.

Help California Save Water
This is the driest year to date in California, based on records going back 128 years. With a hot summer ahead, the governor has urged everyone to use less water. While the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) has a good supply of water, they are urging everyone to do their part to save water.
START WITH YOUR LANDSCAPE:  Our yards can be the biggest source of water waste in Southern California. Visit the IRWD website at https://www.irwd.com/save-water-money/drought for ideas on simple but significant ways you can save water.

Amapola Slope Erosion

Dave Hart, representing the Serrano Park Landscape Committee, has worked with the City and Harvest to create a plan to better manage slit run-off into the Amapola Drainage Channel. This process started back in March and has taken a little longer than expected. Harvest will be removing slit and debris that has over the years been taken out of the channel and deposited onto the sides. The new straw waddle will be removed during this process and then replaced. The City will be replacing their straw waddle and debris fencing in the near future.

Dave’s efforts have resulted in developing better, more efficient and cost saving management policies for v-ditch maintenance, straw waddle practices, and silt removal standards.  These standards will now be used in specifying and inspecting all future contracted work in these areas.

This Year’s Possible HOA Street Tree Removals

Every year, the City of Lake Forest inspects the sidewalks and curbs for signs of damage in need of repair.  If these are damaged by roots and are in need of repair, then we were ordered by the city to remove the trees causing the damage.  This year, it is being handled differently by the city.  The damaged areas will be removed and the city arborist will evaluate the tree roots and tree health and make an assessment as to whether the tree can be saved.  If not, the tree will be removed at the city’s expense.  If the arborist determines that the tree can be saved, then the roots will be trimmed and the hardscape repaired.

This year, the city has identified 3 HOA street trees that are causing damage and are being evaluated for removal.

Two are Brazilian Peppertrees (#203 and #204), on the West side of Paseo Tranquilo between Trabuco and Paseo Vendaval.  These are the only remaining street trees in that parkway and both are lifting the sidewalk.

The other, is a large sycamore tree #S240, on the West side of Paseo Tranquilo near Paseo Narciso, causing curb damage.

It is not definite, but likely that the city arborist will advise that all 3 trees be removed.

Gopher Squad

In an effort to reduce the use of poisons in pest control, the Landscape Committee is working with volunteers to trap gophers in a test program approved by the Board.  We selected the Lower Cipres Channel gopher haven as a testing site as we learn to outwit these turf-damaging pests while keeping the area safe for pets and kids.  The program is proving successful and is now expanding to other sites.
