Have you ever wondered what you can do to help our environment? The City of Urbana offers two recycling programs for residents to make a difference!

Urbana’s residential curbside recycling program, U-CYCLE, began in 1986 and was one of the first citywide recycling programs offered in Illinois. Urbana’s residential recycling program provides service to all residents in single-family through fourplex dwellings. The program serves an estimated 18,000 residents throughout the city.

The City of Urbana’s recycling program expanded in 1999 when recycling was offered to all residents in apartment buildings, dormitories, fraternities/sororities, rooming houses and condominiums. The multifamily program now serves buildings with 5 or more dwelling units. The multifamily recycling program serves an estimated 15,000 residents in Urbana.

Because of these programs, every resident in the City of Urbana has an opportunity to recycle! Recycling is important for many reasons. Go here for more.

U-Cycle collaborated with City of Champaign and Champaign County to provide a one-day household hazardous waste collection event funded by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. There were 1,055 households that registered for the event and 819 households attended the April 9 event, for a participation rate of 78%. There were 15,785 gallons (287 55-gallon drums) of hazardous materials collected at the event, including pesticides, poisons, aerosol & oil-based paints, motor oil, flammable items, mercury-containing products, corrosives, antifreeze, lead-containing products, asbestos, and more! The once annual event is every spring, typically in April.
U-Cycle also collaborated with the City of Champaign and Champaign County to provide a one-day electronics recycling collection event. There were 1,451 households that attended the May 21 event, out of 2,049 households that registered (71% attendance rate). At the May event, 125,928 lbs. of electronic devices were collected at the event, of which 77,929 lbs. were televisions. Televisions comprised 62% of what was collected at the event. Since 2016, the countywide residential electronics collection events have recycled 853 tons of electronic devices, the majority (65%) being televisions. Televisions, especially cathode ray tube (CRT) or ‘tube’ TVs, continue to be the more difficult and costly item to recycle due to the hazardous nature of the lead contained in the cathode ray tubes. The electronics recycling collection events are held twice per year in May and October.

U-Cycle and the Urbana Park District conducted their annual backyard composting workshop on Saturday, May 7, at the Anita Purves Nature Center. Participants learned the importance of backyard composting, the different composting methods, and acceptable/non-acceptable items to place in compost bins/piles. Demonstrations were conducted with a tumbler compost bin and how to set up a vermicomposting (worm composting) bin. One lucky participant received a compost bin tumbler! The workshop is held every year during the first Saturday in May, which coincides with International Compost Awareness Week. Follow the Urbana Park District or U-Cycle for more details!

The Landscape Recycling Center

LRC is a not-for-profit municipal enterprise that accepts local organic yard waste and debris. Over 100,000 cubic yards of waste are diverted from landfills annually and recycled into high quality organic mulch and compost that can be purchased in bulk or by the gallon. Whether you want to grow greener grass or start an herb garden, or you are a professional with a landscaping business, the LRC is a community resource for YOU. Your patronage allows this uniquely sustainable facility to operate. Please take a look around the site and get to know more about your local community gardening partner.

As a not-for-profit facility, the LRC requires a tipping fee for disposal costs based on the type of material and the quantity of waste. The collected fees are used to help offset the cost of operation. Click here for more information.
