THIS WEEK'S SCREENINGS

Designing The Movies: SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL

Artwork by Tony Smerek

35th Anniversary Screening!

High school love triangles are the worst but John Hughes - king of Eighties teen angst - makes them the best kind of worst. This love triangle about popular senior Amanda (Lea Thompson) and childhood best friends Keith (Eric Stoltz) and Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) dealing with insecurity and rejection while figuring out who they are is an underrated gem of the Hughes canon. Best kiss. Best indie soundtrack. Best heroine. Those iconic red fringed gloves! Hughes collaborator and costume designer Marilyn Vance (also of Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink) created the definitive 80s tomboy wardrobe. - NATHALIE ATKINSON

Presented with an introduction by series host Nathalie Atkinson

Dumpster Raccoon: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
Artwork by Nicole Partyka

Learn how some slip of a girly-boy from communist East Berlin could become the internationally ignored song stylist barely standing before you as we KICK OFF PRIDE WEEK at a special DUMPSTER RACCOON CINEMA singalong screening of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (2001)!

Presented with video pre-show, queer opening performance, and open captions throughout – BELT ALONG as LOUD as you WANT as we relive the rollercoaster ride of Hedwig’s journey from the wreckage of Berlin to Miss Midwest Midnight Checkout Queen to the disorienting depths of New York’s nightclub scene in one of the greatest and most iconic queer musicals ever made!

Filmed in and around suburban Toronto, HEDWIG was the low-budget indie rock musical that should have taken the world by storm…except it was released on September 12, 2001. Barely making back half of its tiny $6 million dollar budget, it could have been forgotten – except, like Hedwig herself, it rose like a phoenix from the ashes of defeat to become one of the great icons of queer cinema and a punk-rock star of stage and screen! - ANTHONY OLIVEIRA

Don’t you dare miss it!

In Satoshi Kon's other masterpiece, a machine allows therapists to enter patients' dreams. When it's stolen, all hell breaks loose, and only a therapist (nicknamed "Paprika") seems able to stop it. John Monaghan of the Detroit Free Press says: "Paprika grabs you from the get-go in a series of flowing images and transitions that follow the skewed logic of a dream, jumping from a three-ring circus to a swinging jungle vine."

Paid In Sweat: WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP

Artwork by Andrew Barr

We go the distance with sports, sports-esque, and sports-adjacent films. Get with the program of punching the sky, saving the day, getting up and dusting off, and pushing the limits--win or lose!

30th Anniversary Screening!

The title White Men Can’t Jump makes it one of the best misunderstood films of its time and genre. It is not simply a sports movie--it’s a comedy that is one part buddy film, one part romantic comedy, and stir. It’s smart and thoughtful and the best part, it holds up incredibly well. It’s aging well and, in many ways, it seems to be continuing its growth as a classic.

Beyond its top-tier action sequences, full characters, and razor-wit dialogue, you’re looking at a film that makes even more sense now than it did thirty years ago. Its title would likely carry more weight today. It wouldn’t just be provocative; it would be understood on a deeper level. That’s one hell of a trick that wasn’t just played out on the black top.

Come through and see for yourself how Ron Shelton hustled up to reshape and reframe a corner of cinema with fresh perspective, inspired casting and unpredictable storytelling that has and will stand the test of time. - VANYA GARRAWAY
