Who Volunteers?

This will be my last president’s report.  Our fiscal year ends on June 30 and I will not be president of Oasis Community of West Michigan for the next fiscal year.  Steve Johnson is going to step in as president again.  Sometimes volunteer opportunities become overwhelming – especially when we just don’t have enough volunteers to take on the jobs necessary to keep an organization running.

So, I’m admitting I took on too much, especially with my career still requiring my regular attention, and got burned out. It’s great when there are people who want to take an active role, they have a specific interest, and they jump in and help with specific tasks.  But we don’t have a lot of that in this group.  We need more of that kind of volunteerism – especially if we are hoping to pick up the pace and get more and more young adults in independent living situations.  There are no agencies helping.  We have no staff doing these jobs. Most tasks fall to board members and a handful of committee members who are determined to make this work.  All the board members are wearing multiple hats; taking on a variety of roles and working on various committees.  And, we all have disabled kids as well who need attention – and most of us have jobs and careers too.

We had a board retreat in late April to determine the future of Oasis.  We talked about what needs to get done, how to do it, and where we want to be in 3-5 years.  We need to double or triple the number of volunteers we have to serve the members we currently have and potential new members in the next few years.  We truly all need to look deeply at our talents, interests, and abilities and determine what we can do to best help Oasis provide the housing we want for our adult children with disabilities.

I will continue to work on creating housing opportunities for families working toward transitions through the Coordinated Living Committee.  This is my strong suit – developing and maintaining relationships with non-profit housing developers, getting my foot in the door on new developments where our members can live, and making sure that we are on the forefront of all development in Kent and Ottawa counties.  As co-chairs of this committee, I am working with Lynn Surdock to revamp our training program so it is more flexible to better suit the needs of all our members and to get families ready before housing is ready.

I will also be focusing on developing the Advisory Council for Oasis.  This is a group of professionals in a variety of fields that can give our board members and committees advice as they move forward.  For example, a retired transition teacher can advise on training; a non-profit housing specialist can advise on affordable housing options; and a social worker can advise on roommate situations and community building activities.

Other duties I could use some help with are the Marketing Committee.  If there is a member with marketing experience or who is able to work with (or as) a marketing advisor, please let me know.  Steve is taking over the coordination of the Community Navigation Group – that is the group of local non-profit organizations who provide services to people with disabilities, such as the West Michigan Down Syndrome Association, the ARC, ASKC, Disability Advocates, etc.  Oasis founded this group and we feel it’s important for these organizations to continue to work together to better serve our community.  Steve could use some help from someone who might be able to take meeting notes, be his back-up at quarterly meetings, and coordinate the proposed shared calendar and website.

Please take seriously the need to get involved and  volunteer! Thank you!

Grace Smith- Oasis Community of West Michigan President

WHITE CAPS BASEBALL GAME
July 26th, 6:30 pm
Thank you to Crites, Tidey & Associates who donated the tickets.
RSVP
Members Only
Oasis Community is going to Frederik Meijer Gardens!

July 12th, 7 pm

Come and enjoy art, beautiful gardens and top it off with music in the amphitheater.  Tickets are $13.50 to $18 unless you are a member or have a Bridge Card.  With your Bridge Card (EBT) your tickets are $2 each for up to 4 people.

This event will be Tuesday July 12 and the musical guests are Whorled (playing Celtic, Jazz, Brazilian and American Folk) and CrossBow (Celtic music with a twist). The Gardens open at 9am so come as early as you would like to walk around. The concert starts at 7pm and lasts until 9pm.  People start to congregate at the amphitheater at least by 6pm to claim their area to sit.

There is a handicapped area and if you are not in a chair you must bring a chair.  Most people bring food in to eat during the concert.  All your bags and coolers are checked at the gate.  You may not bring in alcohol (you can buy it there).  If you bring a water bottle it must be empty (or factory sealed), and you can fill it once you are inside the gate.  You can bring  pop, unopened waters, etc…

The seating area that we plan to meet up will be on the west side (as you are coming in at the top of the amphitheater it will be on your left side).  The handicapped area has a lawn around it so bring a lawn chair and make yourselves comfortable!  They also have “bleacher type seating”  at the top area with comfortable chairs that are also available but not handicapped accessible..
If you have never been this might all seem overwhelming!  It is a beautiful place and we’d love you to join us.  Please contact me if you have any questions or need some tickets, we may have some extra.

So, if you are coming and have some extra tickets through your Bridge Card or Membership or if you are coming and need a ticket, please let me know so we can see if we can accommodate you.

Please RSVP
so we can save enough space.  Weather:  the concerts are usually not canceled unless there is a severe storm warning.  You can check the Oasis Facebook page for any updates or contact me.  Thanks!

Zoom Call To Learn About Oasis Independent Training
Wednesday, July 6 at 7:00pm.
Join us for this information session for Oasis Independent Living Training to be held this fall.  We had 4 families attend our previous zoom meeting regarding Oasis Training.  Please join us for a second session for those who missed it last month.  We will do a brief review of Oasis Community – who we are and then do a brief overview of the training that we will be offering.

Please feel free to join us if you feel you are 2-3 years out as well to get a better understanding of the support we provide. It is our experience that it takes 6-18 months to prepare for moving out depending on where you are. Those completing the training will be eligible for participation in community builder supported opportunities.

RSVP to Lynn Surdock, lynn@surdock.com, for a link to the zoom meeting.  We look forward to seeing you there!

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH OASIS VOYAGERS
Who are the Oasis Voyagers?  They are our first community builder group of 9 young adults living on their own in Grand Rapids and working with Polly, their community builder.

This month the Voyagers met at the "Break Room", went gaming, and attended an ACT art creation event and the Asian Pacific Festival.

Fun Quotes From the Voyagers:

"The break room was breakable"

"I liked going to the Asian Pacific Festival and for someone with fear of crowds it was ok."

"I got to try empanadas for the first time and they were great!  The music was amazing"
NAVIGATING LIFE AS WE KNOW IT®
A Podcast About Celebrating Ability, Embracing Diversity, and Living Inclusively

Regular listeners may have wondered why there have been no new episodes posted for the past few months. This hiatus was not something planned. It involved support system technical problems, a need to address recording quality issues and personal schedules (we are a 100% volunteer organization) that made the many productions steps necessary to create, edit and release our recordings extra challenging.

However, (with fingers crossed) we seem to have resolved all outstanding production issues and are ready to finish the Summer and Fall of 2022 with some remarkably interesting and we hope helpful topics for families and individuals navigating a world not designed for people with disabilities! Here is a summary of up-coming programs…hopefully in chronological order!

VitalXChange: The Uber of Disability Resources
VitalXChange provides people with disabilities and their support providers with on-line resources to help them navigate a world of special legal planning, financial planning, benefits planning, educational programs, work incentives (and disincentives), IEPs, Person Centered Planning, Medicaid Waivers, Social Security Disability, affordable and accessible housing, transportation, etc. It is “one stop shopping” for expertise from knowledgeable professionals throughout the nation who can provide custom tailored solutions for your family no matter where you live.

The Law and Disorder
Navigating Life As We Know It (NLAWKI) visits Neil Jansen, an estate planning attorney from Mika Meyers PLC in Grand Rapids and a Mark Drane, the owner, and CEO of Exemplary Coaching. So, what does a skilled attorney and a professional coach offer to the disability community? Good question! Tune in to find out how these professionals can help you expand your housing options to include home ownership for your disabled family member.

Your Val-I/DD Right to Vote
As of January 14, 2022 legislators in at least 27 states have introduced, pre-filed, or carried over 250 bills with restrictive provisions, compared to 75 such bills in 24 states on January 14, 2021. In keeping with restrictive voting laws passed last year, state legislators have resumed the assault with legislation that, if enacted, would disproportionately impact voters of color  the senior citizens and disabled Americans.  What does this mean for Michiganders living with disability? Listen and find out!

zPods: The Sensory Solution to Sleep Deprivation
One of my FAVORITE interviews! A zPod is a very cool, customizable sensory friendly, sleeping pod. These sleeping pods come jam-packed with features such as intelligent lighting control, white noise generation, an innovative air filter, and more.  For this episode I interview George Bailey, one of the co-founders of zPods. George and his wife Christina are the parents of Joseph a young man with autism. zPods have dramatically improved the sleep experience of the whole family!

Housing Solutions for Higher Support Needs
Like many families who have children with “significant” disabilities options for independent living appear non-existent. But that is not necessarily the case. At Oasis Community of West Michigan, we believe that given the appropriate level of support (sometimes 24/7) people with disabilities can live a life of choice with significantly greater options and opportunities. Listen in to find out how customized solutions can provide hope and peace of mind for families as well as for disabled young adults.

We also have many more topics under consideration and hope to hear from you about what you would like to hear on an upcoming episode of Navigating Life As We Know It.

LEGISLATIVE CORNER

Congress has a pair of bills that would add Direct Support Professionals to a list of professions tracked and reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This would allow for states and other stakeholders to accurately examine changes such as wages, number of employees, median age of the workers, etc. for this profession. This would be an important advancement for this profession
