From the

Headmistress
Dear Parents

Next week we look forward to our school play "Matilda" performed in the Guildhall theatre on Thursday 23rd and 24th June.

Drama is an important part of our curriculum.  The opportunity builds confidence, encourages concentration, develops language skills, enables co-operation, and teaches empathy.  Through a variety of dramatic opportunities whether in a school assembly or a whole school play; children learn to "stand in another person's shoes".  A very valuable lesson in life.

It is a huge commitment to stage a whole Junior department play in a small school and we all recognise and are thankful for the support from you our parents, to help make this wonderful opportunity possible. Children do need to be transported to the Guildhall next Thursday and Friday morning and then collected later by yourselves.  Parking is not easy and we do understand that you are busy.  If children need to be transported by us or brought back to school then please let us know.  We are all very much looking forward to the play next week.  The school is alive with the buzz from rehearsing and some very impressive, enthusiastic singing.  The children are very excited about next week and I know they will impress us all with their energetic performances on stage.

U8/U9 Cricket v St Hugh's

The sun came out for the U8 and U9 Cricketers on Wednesday, as they made the short journey to the Grantham Cricket Club for their fixture against St Hugh's.  The U8's began by fielding first, and although it took a few bowls to warm up, by the end of the innings, they were working effectively as a team.  Eliza B. demonstrating some great bowling and notably Harry J. and Freddie P. making some fantastic stops to prevent the ball hitting the boundary line, with Emily also fielding effectively in the outfield.  When it was our turn to bat, Jack M. and Henrietta S. hit some great shots placed in between the fielders to gain some well deserved runs.

Y5 & Y6 Kwik Cricket Tournament - Grantham Cricket Club

Team
Finley, Austen, Seth, Hugo W, Freddie M, Theo, Gabriel, Jack T, Jessica H, Connie, Jai, Serena, Katherine , Taseen, George, Bella.

The sun shone for the Yr 5 and 6 Kwik Cricket Tournament held at Grantham Cricket Club.  As 16 children batted, bowled and fielded throughout the day, amongst fellow primary school children from 16 schools in the Grantham area. It was a fantastic sight, to see so many youngsters enjoying the game, whilst at the same time improving their skills and learning the important values that sport brings, in teamwork, sportsmanship and winning and losing.  The day comprised for some, of disappointment for hitting a ball that was caught, and elation for others at getting a wicket or catching an opponent out.  Both teams faced some tough opposition, with one team finishing in 11th position and the other team coming away as overall Bronze medal winners!
Art

Art - Year 6

Year 6 have created some mouth-watering artwork in these imaginative ice-cream designs.
They have used watercolour pencils to great effect - delicious work year 6!

Art Club - Years 5 & 6

Some very eye-catching artwork has been produced by year 5 & 6, in Art club, based on the theme of eyes and peacock feathers.

The beautiful eye drawing was completed by Katherine - I think you'll agree we have some very talented artists!
Year 6

Matilda Rehearsals Going Well

This week class 6 have been head first into rehearsals for this year's summer production. It continues to progress nicely and I am always impressed by how much the children have learnt in terms of remembering their lines.
Year 5
Another varied and busy week in year 5.

Year 5 have been writing up their 'filling in the holes' stories in neat, and are proud of their finished art projects that are already on display: 3D fabric crisp packets. As well as our 11+ work, there has been singing rehearsals and large-scale junior rehearsals ahead of the production next week. We look forward to sharing this all with you soon.
Year 4

Eva in Class 4 has been very busy recently.

Firstly she won 'Most improved player' last Friday from her Football club at their annual awards, then on Monday, she was scaling the heights of Ben Nevis, Great Britains highest mountain.

She did this amazing feat with her parents, in order to support a friend of theirs, and to raise money for the charity Mind. Eva says they had a snowball fight at the top - hard to believe when we're basking in the recent hot weather, but that's how cold it was at the top!
Eva gave a small talk to the class to explain the climb, showing her sweatshirt and memorabilia. Well done Eva, we're very proud of your achievements!
Year 3
Forces and Magnets

Class 3 have been completing their Science topic about Forces and Magnets by creating a selection of magnetic games. They hope to take them to the Infant Department next week to let the children test them out.
Year 2

Times up

This week we finished our unit on time. Please continue to practise telling the time with your child at home. We all enjoyed playing card games against each other to help improve our number facts knowledge. Ask your child to teach you some of the games we played. Can you beat them?

After being inspired by the Dragon Machine we read during our last English topic, the children have created fantastic dragon eyes. If your child enjoyed this book please also read the Tin Forest by the same author.
In science we have been looking at habitats. We enjoyed playing habitat bingo.
Year 1
Teamwork blossoms as Science goes back to its roots.

This week, Class One have been challenging each other to speedy Science tasks. They are seen here completing giant flower posters, labelling main parts of the plant and stating one job that each part does to keep the plant growing strong and healthy. It was so lovely to see all the groups working hard, discussing their answers, each taking on a different task and smiling as they set about the challenge. This is the song we have been learning to help us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bFU_wJgvBI  Completing the task first were Isla and William but a massive well done to everyone.
Reception

Competing, Coding and Capacity

The children are very excited and are looking forward to Sport’s Day in a few weeks.  During their PE lessons they have been busy practising the sprint on the track, keeping in their own lanes, the kangaroo race, the bean bag hoop race, the hurdles and the overhead bean bag throw. Well done everyone -what a great sporting week in Reception!

In their IT lesson the children had a go at some basic coding on the Ipads. They used Scratch Junior and were learning to instruct their character to move forwards and backwards, turn around, become larger and smaller and even disappear altogether. They even chose their own background and their own different character/sprite.

In Maths the children have been learning about different ways to measure, particularly focusing on capacity, using language such as full and empty to describe how much liquid is in their container. Some even looked at litres when they were filling up containers. Well done! There were also lots of different Maths activities in the outdoor classroom, where the children had to look at all the different ways they could make a number using addition and subtraction strategies.

Super learning Reception!

Pre-School
Pre-School

We have had a great week of learning over this past week.

Tillie and Ava enjoyed doing lots of different puzzles and have been working on bigger and slightly trickier puzzles. Both have shown great determination to persevere when finding the right piece to fit. They were so proud after completing each puzzle they had chosen.

Irya enjoyed some super Maths work. He counted and matched the correct number of shells for each number that was on the tuft spot. Irya also beautifully coloured in a caterpillar after we had discussed insects and their habitats as part of our project this term.

The children also had a go at independent drawing of an animal that they had seen at Natureland on our school trip.  Alfie's seal was enjoying swimming in the pool, as you can see from the picture.

Thanks to the warm weather everyone has enjoyed playing in the water tray learning about volume and capacity. Maximilian was fascinated to see that the pressure of his hand and arm in the cylinder made ‘all the water come out’. George loved feeling the bubbles at the top of the cylinders once he had filled them with water.

The children found having their foot painted blue a tickling experience! Why did they have to have their foot painted you might ask? Well you’ll have to wait until next week to find out!
Pupil's Achievements Out of School

Henrietta & Felicity played their first tournament on Sunday for Newark Town Football Club and they loved it!!! Could this be the beginning of great things?!!
Well done Jessica

Jessica came second in the “Nine Year Old Girls” category at the Grantham Swim Club Grand Prix at the weekend. It was a Lincolnshire inter-club competition held over four separate weekends, and swimmers had to compete in all disciplines.
Inspirational Swimmer

Bella, Seth & Theo met Freya Colbert at the Swim Club Grand Prix at the weekend.

Inspirational swimmer Freya trained at Grantham Swim Club for four years.

This summer, once she’s completed her A-Levels at KGGS, she’ll be competing at the World Swimming Championships, before heading to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham!!!
