Purdue Extension’s Community Development program (CDExt) partnered with the Purdue Center for Regional Development to serve as co-hosts of the conference. This year, the CDExt was a Platinum Sponsor and played a key role in several workshops and sessions. For example:

Purdue Extension is excited to partner with the Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Purdue Center for Regional Development (PCRD), and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) to launch the Agribusiness Initiative.
The Indiana Agribusiness Initiative's mission is to engage the Agribusiness community at a scope and level of understanding of agricultural operations beyond the traditional SBDC offering of "general business consulting" resulting in an added level of economic success in this vital Indiana sector.

Shocked and Not Shocked by Home Assessments
|
|
~by Dr. Larry DeBoer
May 24, 2022
Every year about this time homeowners receive a Form 11 from their county assessor. It’s the notice of assessment of land and structures, and it shows the previous assessed value of the home, and the new value for taxes payable next year.
I’m a homeowner, and I got my Form 11 last week. I was shocked. And not shocked.

Purdue Extension “My Hometown is Cool” Program Creates New Projects in West Vigo Community
Purdue Extension Vigo County piloted a program called “My Hometown is Cool” with West Vigo High School. The school government class learned about the assets in the community, created project ideas and proposals, competed in a pitch competition, and two teams were awarded funding to implement their projects through an Oakley Foundation Grant.
The winning projects include a special event, Taste of West Terre Haute, that is May 6-8 and hopes to encourage visits to local restaurants and places of interest including: Macksville Coffee Company, Grandma Vera's Café, Sycamore Winery, St. Anne Shell Chapel, and Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area.

The other project that was funded is a community garden located beside the West Vigo Little League Ballpark. The winning team has partnered with many local organizations to get the garden started. The City of West Terre Haute created water access to the three large plants where the team planted a wide variety of vegetables that will eventually be harvested and donated to local food pantries, residents, and possibly businesses.
Purdue Extension Educators Kristi Whitacre, Community Development, and Sara Haag, 4-H & Youth Development, are working with Vigo County School Corporation to extend this program to Terre Haute North and South High Schools this fall.
