Racial Justice, Juneteenth: What you should know
You might have heard of Juneteenth described as a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Well…that’s not quite accurate. Juneteenth, now in its second year as a federal holiday, is celebrated on June 19. Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion about the anniversary of Juneteenth and what it represents. Pastor Yolanda Williams, who serves Glenwood United Parish, wrote a guest blog post providing some important clarification.
While the Emancipation Proclamation and Juneteenth did not entirely end the enslavement or forced involuntary servitude of Africans, she says, its celebration does have a place alongside other celebrations of freedom and should be a trumpet call to continue to work for justice for all.
