Congratulations to our Class of 2022!

Forgive us while we brag a little!
We are so truly proud of our 25 graduates who have been regular attendees of Homework Club.  There is much to share with you in this newsletter! With the news the way it is these days, we hope you'll take the time to be inspired by our fabulous students.
Thank you for reading.
Because of the support of our broader Homework Club family, of which you are a member, we are doing our part to ensure as few barriers to secondary education as possible. From the application fees we told you about earlier this year, to our incredible program facilitators, Natalie and Katie, and dedicated volunteer tutors truly showing up to be there for our students, and to the end of year tuition and supplies bursaries we awarded to our 25 graduates this year, totalling $15,000, we continue the work of our mission. THANK YOU for helping to make this happen.

There are many inspiring stories of hard work paying off for all of our grads - and we wish we could share them all! One that certainly stands out features a student who was part of our Student Spotlight series earlier this year: Ashki. As quoted in this recent Vancouver Sun article, 'from being barred from attending school in Kurdistan to a full-ride scholarship at UBC, it’s been a wild and wonderful journey for Ashki Shkur'. We are so thrilled to report that Ashki has received an $80,000 entrance scholarship to UBC, as well as a Terry Fox Award, TD community leadership scholarship, a Beedie Luminaries scholarship...and that's not all! You won't want to miss the article above.

Hard work like Ashki's was certainly evident for all graduating Homework Club members earlier this month at Britannia's graduation ceremony. Capturing that spirit, was one of our own, Sam, also featured in an earlier newsletter, and who delivered the Class of 2022's valedictorian address! In the words of Homework Club facilitator, Katie, 'Our Sammy-boy. A young man who we sometimes refer to as the “dad” at Homework Club for his jokes and quirky demeanour is now the proud valedictorian of his 2022 graduating class and we couldn’t be more chuffed about this...Since beginning at Britannia in Grade 8, Sam has attended Homework Club and treated our space like a second home...I had the great honour of placing the valedictory sash around his head and sending him off with best wishes before the grads entered the ceremony. Sam spoke with eloquence, ease and a little bit of sass, playfully poking fun and offering heartfelt words of insight and thoughtfulness." An excerpt from Sam's valedictorian address:

"The essence of what I’m trying to say here is that Britannia isn’t a building. It’s a story. And in the words of writer Sam Wells, “we live our life in stories.” Each of us has come to carry the spirit of Britannia in a beautifully unique way, and as we depart from here to whatever comes next . . . each one of our faces will remain engrained on the diverse fabric of its ongoing life. So congratulations, bruins, not only for grabbing a square with your name on it, but for becoming part of a story with your name in it."
We can't exist without your continued support.
We humbly thank you for whatever you are able to give today.
