BARKING NEWS

It's been a busy few months at the Home, but we wanted to paws, and thank you for all your support! Whether you’ve volunteered, donated, sent us your stories or kind words, fostered or adopted – knowing you’re there really helps.

Like many other animal shelters, we have been overwhelmed with the number of animals coming into our care. We recently held a Clear Our Shelter event, which saw many of our large dogs find loving homes, including some of our residents who have been with us for a number of months. We have many residents still looking for their forever homes, so if you or someone you know is looking for a furry friend, check out our website to see who is available for adoption.

It’s also been busy outside the Home, as we’re starting to attend more events, including a visit to Bexley Care Centre with alumni Edith the Greyhound. The residents were delighted and many loved seeing Edith, giving her pats and feeding her kibble! We have missed our regular visits to aged care centres as part of our Community Program and hope they will become a regular occurrence again soon!

Finally, we’re currently raising funds to purchase 2 Bair Huggers. (Cute name, right?) It’s a machine that helps prevent hypothermia in animals, which is critical to their recovery post-surgery. If you would like to contribute or find out more information, click here.

HAPPY TAILS

Bandit The One-Eyed Beauty

Bandit (formerly Clare) the 7-year-old terrier arrived at the Home back in March quite nervous and in a dire situation. She had severe dental disease, was covered in fleas, had infected flea-bitten skin and her right eye was completely enlarged and required urgent surgery. It was clear that she was in a great deal of discomfort and in a lot of pain. The animal care team at the Home knew they had to take immediate action to relieve Bandit’s pain. It was a blessing in disguise that Bandit arrived when she did, as her eye and other health issues could have worsened.

The animal care team performed surgery on Bandit to address her dental disease and to surgically remove her right eye, to ensure she could live a pain-free and comfortable life as soon as possible. After the successful procedure and many health checks, Bandit recovered well with a lot of rest in foster care.

A Very Special Volunteering Day

Sydney Dogs & Cats Home welcomed the Members of Headquarters 17th Sustainment Brigade to our Strathfield clinic last month. The Home has had a long-standing partnership with the Army as part of our Community Programs and we were excited to welcome a group of personnel back to the clinic.

The members kindly volunteered their time to assist with maintenance including clearing the grounds, gardening, cleaning the windows and general maintenance. They were rewarded with snuggles and kisses from some of our furry residents for making the clinic welcoming to our animals, guests, volunteers and staff.

Thank you to the Members of the Headquarters 17th Sustainment Brigade for all the work you did!

Two Little Ringworm Stars

There has been a number of kittens who recently arrived at the Home with ringworm, including Tarvos and Narvi, both named after little moons around Saturn.

Tarvos and Narvi first arrived at the home in need of help. After the Animal Care Team conducted health checks, it was discovered that these two fluffballs had ringworm. Despite its name, ringworm (also known as dermatophytosis) is not an actual worm, but a fungal infection which can affect the cat’s skin, hair and nails. It is called “ringworm” due to the circular rash that is usually red, itchy and can be shaped like a ring.

Edith the Greyhound's Grand Visit

We were so pleased that we were able to visit the residents at Bexley Care Center recently with Sydney Dogs & Cats Home alumni dog, Edith the Greyhound.

Edith delighted many of the residents who loved seeing her, feeding her kibble and giving her pats. One resident Noel, even shared his cup of water with Edith, which put a big smile on his face.

While our regular aged care program visits had to be placed on hold due to covid, we are so pleased we were safely able to return and hope there will be more visits to come!

Our aged care program was a highlight for the residents who found joy in interacting and patting with our dogs, receiving tail wags and licks in return. It also provided a welcomed break from the shelter and the chance to socialise with different people.

Topdeck, The Top Cat

Elysia had heard about Sydney Dogs & Cats Home 6 years ago from her mum, who knew she loved rescue animals. When Elysia and her partner moved out, they started looking for a 3rd member of the family and had seen Topdeck on the SDCH website. However, at the time they weren’t quite ready for a pet. Fast forward 3 months they were finally ready and by chance, Topdeck was still available. It was meant to be! Elysia says “Topdeck is a serious joy to have around. From his cute beep meows to his crab walk ritual in the morning he is the best and we love him so much.” Elysia and her partner adopted another cat, Cinnamon who Topdeck has a bit of sibling rivalry!

Topdeck very much made himself at home from the get-go and has become a huge part of their family. He even claimed a beanbag as his throne and is now one of his favourite spots to chillax! Elysia says “The impact Topdeck has had since coming into our lives is huge. He’s always there for us if we feel down or lonely. He is always there for a cuddle and a purr."

WAGGING ADVENTURES

Sydney Dogs & Cats Home at the Sydney Dog Lovers Show

We were back in action at Sydney Dogs Lovers Show at Olympic Park at the beginning of August and it was a blast being there in person with other dog lovers!

Thank you to everyone who stopped to have a chat, show us photos of their SDCH alumni, and donated or bought merch. Our volunteers and staff had a great time and we had alumni Nina the pug represent the Home at the pat-a-pooch zone.

We can't wait for next year!

Running for the Dogs & Cats

The City2Surf returned after a two-year pause and our running team were in the thick of it last Sunday 14th of August, raising awareness for the Home and money for the animals in our care.

Our running team set a goal to raise $5000 and we were thrilled to successfully reach our goal by race day! With the support from friends, family and our community, the Sydney Dogs & Cats Home running team raised $5755.65.

Check out the photos above of our team on the running course!

Alice has been at the Home for almost a year! Help us find her forever home!

Alice the cattle dog, came to the home as a lost dog in October last year and has been patiently waiting to find her perfect forever home ever since. This young girl has a few requirements for her perfect home, including an active family so she can be included in all the activities and a big yard so she can run around and use up that energy! Alice will reward you with cuddles and licks at a moment's notice.

Her foster carers describe Alice as an uncut diamond; a little rough around the edges but can be smoothed out. Her favourite activities include chasing balls, but not necessarily returning them, playing tug and playing with squeaky toys, however, they don't usually last very long!

Alice loves people but may take a few moments before she warms up to you, but once she does she will give you hugs and will want all the pats and massages, giving you a side-eye if you stop.

Alice has been one of the Home's longest residents and has been patiently waiting for someone who will love and commit to her and provide her unconditional love.

If Alice sounds like the diamond in the rough you or someone you know is looking for, click here to send an application to meet her today!

Help Keep Them Toasty Warm

This winter, we urgently need your help for a piece of equipment that will make the world of difference for the animals in our care.

It’s the Bair Hugger – a machine to help prevent hypothermia in animals, which is critical to their recovery.

This piece of equipment is effective in distributing heat to sick or injured animals and supporting their weight during surgery. It aids in their recovery and increases their chances of survival and reduces the chance of complications.

Will you help us? We’re crowdfunding to raise enough for three Bair Huggers, which will cost us $3,300.

Please donate today and share with your friends and family and help support Sydney's lost, abandoned and neglected animals.
