IMPACT UPDATE
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY 2022!
246 Years Later, Our Work Isn't Finished.
But this July 4th, the Woodson Center's 1776 Unites scholars and activists ask all Americans to choose grace over grievance and come together.
Our nation finds itself in a moment of crisis. Ideological divisions over American civic identity are deeper and more bitter than at any time since the late 1960s. In this video, 1776 Unites offers our country a declaration of principles for overcoming divisions and renewing the vision of the founding:

"How do we proceed today as Black Americans? As Americans in general? By remembering our history — one of triumph, struggle and resilience — and confronting our present, honestly. The American Dream is closer than ever before. We CAN move forward: with renewal, grace, and unity..."

Wilfred Reilly: Why America Lost its Confidence – and How to Get It Back

National Review recently published a statement – signed by a number of writers, academics, and leaders – affirming American values in an age of growing doubt. In his follow-up essay, signatory and 1776 Unites scholar Wilfred Reilly makes the case for American confidence: "The case against the modern West rests upon a foundation of sand. It is based on falsehoods and half-truths and theories most smart normal citizens would dismiss as insane upon a close reading. So, what to do, for those of us that know this?"

Clarence Thomas: Created Equal
Looking for a good 4th of July movie? Check out this documentary on the remarkable life of America's most consequential – and controversial – Supreme Court Justice.

No matter your politics or philosophy, this documentary story will show you the power of perseverance. From the filmmakers: "Beyond the headlines, Thomas' life is a classic American tale: born poor in the segregated South, he became one of the most influential justices in the highest court in the land. Created Equal tells his story truly and fully, without cover-ups or distortions.

With unprecedented access, the producers interviewed Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Virginia, for over 30 hours of interview time, over many months. Justice Thomas tells his entire life’s story, looking directly at the camera, speaking frankly to the audience. After a brief introduction, the documentary proceeds chronologically, combining Justice Thomas’ first person account with a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience."
