Featured Project

HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE COMPLEX

Our featured project this month is a high school science complex to accommodate the needs of the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya. The complex features a modern design for the laboratories, prep- rooms, staff rooms, and washrooms.

The school design factors in aspects that make the project energy efficient incorporating finishes that will help it in achieving low maintenance budgets in the operations stage.

This in addition to our work for Moi Education Center (MEC) High School puts Design Source at the forefront of design for educational institutions.  Thinking of upgrading your institution to fit in with the new CBC requirements? Think Design Source......

The Coffee Stirrer Tower?

The World's Skinniest Tower.....

NewYork City welcomes its latest addition to the Manhattan Skyline at a height of 1,428 feet including a 300-foot decorative steel crown,  and a height-to-width ratio of 24:1, making it the Most Slender Skyscraper in the World!

The Steinway Tower skyscraper is the first thing you will notice on 111 West 57th Street, made with the highest strength concrete in the world overlooking Central Park it makes a powerful statement looking incredibly slim from every angle...Now that's sleek!

The super-tall tower is an addition to Steinway Hall, a historic 1925 building known as the former home of the piano maker Steinway and Sons and a concert hall.

Drawing inspiration from "the golden age of the Manhattan skyscraper" the architects ensured that though it may have a futuristic look from afar,  each exterior section of the building is paired with a layer of terracotta giving it that glamorous late 19th-century feel without overdoing it.

The building has been dubbed 'The Coffee Stirrer' because of its slenderness and the terracotta on the façade appears to change colour and texture when seen in different lights and
angles.

Steinway Tower is now opening its doors to new residents after almost 10 years since the project was announced!

A Digital Archive for Ukraine's Landmarks

Generating a 3D Model to Backup Ukraine

Something a bit more positive around Ukraine!

All's fair in love and war. In the ongoing war in Ukraine more than just people are lost in the devastation—the statues, buildings, and art that form the shared culture of the Ukrainian people are also at risk of destruction.

Backup Ukraine is a project that aims to give ordinary people the power to help preserve Ukraine’s cultural heritage. Hundreds of landmarks, cultural sites, monuments and everyday things that civilians can scan on mobile phones through an app called Polycam which the app's software generates a detailed 3D model that will live permanently in a digital archive.

The scans are so high-quality, the project's creators say, that they can be projected in a physical space to explore for educational purposes and can also be used to reconstruct destroyed cultural artifacts. The team is also exploring the possibility of creating 3D models of destroyed churches and buildings that haven't been scanned, using digital footage from the past.
Ukraine is home to seven World Heritage Sites, designated by UNESCO for holding cultural importance and legally protected. This project came after a few days in April when UNESCO itself reported that at least 52 cultural sites in Ukraine have been partially damaged or destroyed since the start of the conflict. Backup Ukraine is a partnership between VICE Media Group’s Virtue, the Blue Shield Denmark and the Danish UNESCO National Commission.

For the first time in history a country's artifacts are being documented in augmented reality during an ongoing war, a precedent that has sparked conversations about how this technology can be used in other countries experiencing conflict or war.

“Destroying a country's cultural heritage is the fastest way to undermine its national identity,” - Søren la Cour Jensen, Chair of Blue Shield Denmark
