MIKE'S BEER BEAT
New or notable, classic or quaffable, Mike is pouring a glass of it.

Beer:  Grapefruit Wheat
Style: Wheat beer
ABV: 4.4%
Brewer: Boulevard Brewing Co.

Mike Sez: I admit, I don’t give wheat beers a lot of love. So when I got a chance to try the summer limited Grapefruit Wheat beer from Boulevard Brewing Company of Kansas City, Missouri, I figured I should take one for the team.

Boulevard is one of my favorite breweries in one of my favorite cities. It was acquired in 2013 by Belgium’s Duvel Moortgat, which makes the famous Belgian strong pale ale Duvel and also owns Brewery Ommegang and Firestone Walker Brewing Co.

The acquisition certainly hasn’t resulted in a drop in quality at Boulevard. The brewery’s top sellers, its Unfiltered Wheat and its Pale Ale (my personal favorite), still taste great and so does another favorite, the Tank 7 strong saison, which I’ve sung the praises of previously in this column.

Conclusion: Wheat beers are perfect for summer. They are typically lighter and not as strong as IPAs or pale ales. This Grapefrult Wheat is unfiltered, so it’s hazy, like a hazy IPA, and citrusy, too, with flavors of grapefruit, of course, but also unsweetened orange juice. Next time you are grabbing a six-pack of Blue Moon or a hefeweizen, see if this beer is available.

As Sheryl Crow says, “I think a change … would do you good.”
PLAYLIST: INSTRUMENTAL MADNESS REDUX!
We cracked open the Correspondence Bag this week on the pod and one topic that caught our community's interest was episode 1345. Bill Mulligan joined Patrick to discuss what happens when a band you love, that also has a great singer, play instrumentals.

We added some new songs to the Instrumental Madness playlist we created around the topic and it is still open for collaboration. Got some songs that fit the criteria? Add them by clicking here
