'Bridge Messy, Emerge Ignited' ArtTalk
ONE WEEK AWAY

Thurs. June 23
6:00pm

An evening with a range of artists featured in ArtVan’s 10×10 -- how they create, value, and market their original works of art. Through storytelling, visual aids, and Q&A, artists share how art guides their professions, practices, including lessons learned along the way. Whether you’re an emerging artist, or have a lifelong practice, or maybe you hesitate to call yourself an artist, join us in the Theater to celebrate the many ways art supports our local community!

Save the Date for Closing Night: Thurs. July 28, 5:30pm

THEME: What Are You Growing?

We use recycled and repurposed materials as often as we can. This annual Spring project is a favorite. As the school year comes to a close, Youth ring in a new season and new experiences with pansies, planters, and paint!

"Today at Perryman I was greeted by Stephen with a big kind hug. Stephen had moved from Perryman a year ago and he was back just visiting for the day. He remembered this project from last spring and assisted me in the demo. ArtVan can have such an important impact on a child. Very heartwarming! Stephen said that he was moving out of state and when we were packing up, I got another caring hug."

A Safe Space

While ArtVan was in session at a neighborhood, a staff was filling up water indoors, and met a Brunswick investigator who was observing an apartment due to suspicious drug use and selling. There was no action taken that afternoon. However, a companion Guidance Counselor let the staff know that an arrest occurred that night. Two women were arrested, and a teenage daughter was taken into safe custody. The ArtVan staff texted a reliable neighborhood parent to check-in. The mom confirmed but stated that it was late at night and was dealt with very quietly. It was her impression that most of the neighborhood Youth did not know about it.

The following week, ArtVan staff did not hear of any conversation regarding the arrest. If there had been, staff would have used this time as an opportunity to help Youth process any feelings related to the situation.

There are often families who are in conflict and tell their child to not hang out with another child. When this comes up in program, we can respect the house rules by arranging youth at different tables, however all are welcome and encouraged to explore how to engage in the same space safely. The ArtVan team openly listens and problem solves with the parents. Most of the time, the youth stays, makes art, and forgets all about the conflict or any animosity.
