Juneteenth: A History
The Civil War ended slavery. But it didn’t do so everywhere, all at once, on one date. That's why we have “Juneteenth”—the day in 1865 when enslaved people on Galveston Island, Texas, learned of their freedom. It's just one liberation day among a thousand, but it’s come to represent them all. Read how and why Emancipation unfolded in fits and starts and was only completed on December 18, 1865, long after the war ended.

US Air Force Building New Base on Tinian Island 
Satellite imagery shows major construction on Tinian, which the USAF plans to use as an alternative operating location to the massive Andersen Air Force Base on Guam. Concerns about Andersen's vulnerability to a Chinese missile barrage have been growing in recent years.

History Detectives Pay Tribute to the Two Forgotten Iwo Jima Flag Raisers
On the left is Brent "Westy" Westemeyer, dressed up as WWII Marine Harold "Pie" Keller. On the right is Eric Krelle, portraying WWII Marine Harold Schulz. Through years of painstaking research, Westy and Eric proved that Keller and Schulz were Iwo Jima Flag Raisers depicted in Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph. On Flag Day, Westy and Eric met at the dedication of a new memorial (which Westy designed) to Keller in Brooklyn, Iowa.

Army Veteran Walking Across America
30+ year Army veteran Kenny Mintz is walking across America to raise funds for specific charities and to honor his late mother who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.
