While in residency with the Maltings and Newcastle University's Centre for Rural Economy (CRE) and Institute for Creative Arts Practice, Ms Coates worked with Prof Sally Shortall, whose research focuses on gender relations in agriculture."
This position will support the management and governance bodies of the CGIAR GENDER Impact Platform to meet their objectives, and it will oversee program budgeting and financial management as well as supervise operations. This position reports to the Platform Director and works closely with the GENDER Impact Platform Office, the leaders of the modules on Evidence, Methods and Alliances, research teams and partners. The position will also support the new initiative ‘Harnessing Gender and Social Equality for Resilience in Agrifood Systems’ (‘HER +’), as part of the CGIAR gender portfolio of work, working closely with the HER+ team. The incumbent will supervise a Program Officer, and work with the Hosting Center team at ILRI on contracting, finance and administration.

Makerere University (Uganda) and Cornell University (USA), in partnership with the Generating Evidence and New Directions for Equitable Results (GENDER Platform) arm of One CGIAR, have designed a Gender-Responsive Plant breeding and seed systems course targeting interdisciplinary teams of biophysical and social scientists in national agricultural research institutions (NARIs), the CGIAR system, and other agricultural research for development (A4RD) institutions in South Asia. The purpose of the course is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to identify and address gender issues in plant breeding and seed systems programs to achieve climate resilience outcomes.
The DAAD Agriculture-Alumni Training Network is organizing a one-week
workshop in Germany and Czech Republic. The theme for this workshop is ‘Integrating Systems for Sustainable Agricultural Intensification’. This initiative will bring together German university alumni from East Africa for a 7-day workshop hosted by the University of Hohenheim including the international Tropentag conference in Prague under the topic “Can agroecological farming feed the world? Farmer’s and academia’s view”.

The OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists reward and encourage women working and living in developing countries who are in the early stages of their scientific careers, having often overcome great challenges to achieve research excellence. Awardees must have made a demonstrable impact on the research environment, both at a regional and international level, and must have received their PhD in STEM in the last ten years.
"In a fit of nostalgia, I recently watched Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001). Though I’d seen the film years before, I noticed this time that the plot turns on an Asian woman: Mark’s Japanese ex-wife, the thorny source of his and Daniel’s decades-long conflict. Yet she is both nameless and faceless: The only shot we glimpse of her is of her naked back arched over Daniel on the floor. Simultaneously erased and hypervisible, she exists solely to be a two-timing whore.
I wish Bridget Jones’s Diary were an outlier indicative of a former era. But like a stubborn rash, this phenomenon refuses to die out. In other beloved films and TV shows written, directed, and/or produced by white women, the figure of the Asian woman might be hypervisible or erased, but she is always a whore. I noticed it again in Netflix’s Senior Year, released this past May, and in media across the time span of the two films—media created not, as you might expect, by white men but white women. Under their gaze, Asian women are either invisible or slotted into one of five categories: The Hypersexual Woman, The Other Woman, The Competition, The New Girlfriend, or The (Faux) Aspirational Goal"
