End of Year Message

No academic year is without its challenges, and yet no academic year is without its many successes either.  For a large part of 2021-2022, ASV and schools around the world continually adjusted to the global pandemic, while also ensuring that students are well-prepared for their futures.

While the pandemic is certainly not over yet, there are many optimistic signs that it is abating. This improvement, which we all hope will continue, affords many people the opportunity to reimagine a post-pandemic world and the lessons derived from it. For this generation, it was a historical moment that included loss, anxiety and radical changes in daily life.  However, it also forced us to reconsider what is truly valuable, how precious life truly is, and the role education,  educators, health and healthcare providers play in our world.  In my opinion, the world persevered in large part because of the adaptability, ingenuity and compassion of educators and healthcare providers, who in the depth of the storm, stayed the course and cared for children and families above and beyond the call of duty.  So, we owe an  immense thank  you to all of those who made a difference when everything was different.

Gratefully, successes abounded as well throughout 2021-2022.  The 71 Grade 12 graduates of Class of 2022  are the living embodiment of what we hope our world will become: caring, responsible, respectful, and engaged global citizens.  This CARE ethos pervades the culture of ASV in so many ways and through so many school stakeholders.

From the generous acts of elementary students raising funds to support disabled animals, to the Parent Delegates honoring faculty and staff during Appreciation Week, to the altruistic donation of 2,000 masks by a high school parent, to the dedication of the Board of Governors in supporting a wide variety of school improvement initiatives, to the support from the Athletics and ASV+ teams in earning the Middle States Association’s Program of Distinction in Athletics,  and to the selfless dedication of our school nurses who took care of all us day after day  . . . the list could go on and on with so many exemplary acts of our school community’s good will that collectively creates the “ASV Difference.”

So, on behalf of all members of the ASV community, please allow me to express my most heartfelt thanks, appreciation and gratitude for the commitment that all stakeholders make in supporting  a world-class international school.  My commitment is to continually foster improvement, innovation, a spirit of caring and generosity, and the tireless pursuit of and commitment to excellence.

Please enjoy a well-deserved, safe and enjoyable summer, and we look forward to welcoming our returning and new students back to ASV on September 8, 2022. Thank you again for a wonderful and successful 2021-2022!

With all best wishes,

Michael L. Smith
Director

Professional Development Activities Held this Week

On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, several discipline-specific vertical teams (teachers from K-12) were able to collaborate on designing Cornerstone Tasks, authentic assessments that evaluate our students’ progress toward each discipline’s Transfer Goals, to be implemented during the 2022-2023 academic year.

Throughout the 2021-2022 academic year, several teams have collaborated to design interdisciplinary tasks that are scaffolded from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Examples of these interdisciplinary tasks include Mathematics with Physical Education, and English with The Arts. The purpose of these tasks is to provide opportunities for students to see the transfer of skills between disciplines and apply these skills to authentic, real-life situations.

Classroom Activities

Teachers included in the last week plan special activities aimed to have an enjoyable transition to the summer vacation. These activities included art projects, handicrafts, team games, movies, and water! See some examples below.
Grade 1 Water Party.  On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, the three Grade 1 classes had a fun time playing with water in Park A.
Crazy Hair Day in Grade 2 on June 13. A fun way to open the last week of classes!
Grade 4 - Graphic Novel and Outdoor Reading: Students finished the year transforming a part of their favorite novels into a Graphic Novel. “They presented their work Gallery style and the class was able to view and jot down what their favorite graphic novelist did well,”  Ms. Megan Rose describes. Also this week, these classes  enjoyed some reading time outside.

Grade 5, Summer Reading and Team Challenges: Ms. Amanda Bird, the ASV Curriculum Coordinator, visited Grade 5 to introduce the Summer Reading Project.  Complete the Summer Reading Project will familiarize students with the Reading Program in Middle School.  Also this week, Grade 5 Blue developed teamwork and collaboration throughout a vibrant challenge with paper cups.
Short Theater Performances for Grade 1 and Kinder: The Spanish Department organized a theater day in Grade 5. The activity took place on Wednesday in Grade 1 and on Thursday in Kinder. The students performed fun theater scenes for their young peers in those grade levels.

ASV+ Activities Final Days

All students registered in ASV+ have had an intense end of the year. While Team Sport’s students played a tournament involving all three sports in different teams, STEAM students finished up the year building robots and playing Minecraft for Education.

The ASV+ Tournament finished in very good spirits. All teams enjoyed and all student-athletes got a reward, an ice popsicle. The teams who won were the ones that not only got better results in the competitions but who also got the CARE extra points for being prepared, responsible, respectful and engaged.

In Grades 1-2:
There was a draw between the two first teams so we had two winners:
  • Grade 1 Team 1 (Blue). Captain: Dameli A.
  • Grade 2 Team 6 (White). Captain Joan G.
In Grades 3-4-5:
We had a clear winner who won every game and got all the possible CARE points, getting the maximum points available (14 points). And a Runners-up, following close with 13 points!
  • Grade 5 Team 10 (White). Captain: Jorge R.
  • Grade 3 Team 1 (Blue). Captain: Maria Y.
In STEAM while some of our students built up their dreamed robots, others were creating their dreamed world in Minecraft for education or making movies with stop motion.

It has been an intense and rewarding week. All the ASV+ team want to thank the families for their support and would like to wish everyone a wonderful summer break!
