Story of the Week:
"Power of One"
This week, I want to talk about the power of one. To do so, let's focus on this week's quote:
"If you add only a little to a little and do this often, soon that little will become great."- Greek poet Hesiod
I think we often get overwhelmed and feel very far away from where we are to where we want to be. We probably have a list of all the things we must achieve first before being where we ultimately want to be, but I want to challenge you to rewire the way you think.
Last week I was listening to a podcast, and the guest on the show was a man named Ed Mylett. I'm sure many of you are familiar with him, but for me he was someone I had yet to be introduced to. He was talking about this idea of the power of one. He said that we must get in the mindset that our dreams are much closer than we think and that they are actually just ONE move, one call, one connection, one investment, etc... away from where we want to be.
Ed talks about playing a round of golf with this very wealthy man and he asks the man how he was able to make his fortune.
He looked at Ed and said, "Let me tell you a quick story about myself and a friend of mine. We both invested $50,000 each into our buddy's start up. My friend ended up getting cold feet and asked for his money back (which he got back), while I stuck it through and kept my money in. That's how I made my fortune."
The man's "buddy" was Jeff Bazos and he was an early investor in Amazon.
To give you a little more monetary context, the first 20 or so outside investors in Amazon put in around $50,000 apiece for a stake of a little less than 1% of the company at the time. If those early investors had held on to their entire stakes, and those stakes had never been diluted by later investors, they would be worth $3.5 billion today — a return of 70,000x.
This is of course an extreme example of how you really are just ONE move away from completely transforming your life.
I definitely needed this lesson being in the music industry and being overwhelmed at times by how far away I feel from where I want to be. Learning about the power of one more from Ed really gave me a new found sense of confidence and drive.
Additionally, Ed just released his book called "The Power of One More" if you want to read about this idea further. I haven't read it yet, but I plan to and will definitely be making it next week's book of the month.
So remember, when you're feeling overwhelmed and far from reaching your goal, remind yourself that YOU and only YOU have the power to make this change! Don't over prepare, don't find excuses, just move forward. Your next step is the ONE that will change your life.
