This month's featured article looks at the reasons behind the birth of the project "BENEDICTINE WAY. The forge of Europe", which aims to emphasise the value of religious heritage and combat depopulation in the rural region of El Andévalo, in Southern Spain. 


We had a month full of celebrations such as the Ton Kootpenning recognition received by our Advisory Board President Lilian Grootswagers, the award received by our member CCT for the project 1719 at the Museum + Heritage Awards 2022 and the new EU funding line for the Híjar Synagogue in Spain.

"BENEDICTINE WAY. THE FORGE OF EUROPE", REVITALISING EUROPE'S RURAL AREAS THROUGH HERITAGE CONSERVATION
Traditions have transcended borders since ancient times, as in the case of Benedict of Nursia, a monk born in Italy but whose example constitutes an essential chapter in the history and culture of the Andévalo region, in Southern Spain. The project "BENEDICTINE WAY. The forge of Europe", aims, on the one hand, to emphasise the enormous cultural value of the Benedictine religious heritage of El Andévalo and on the other hand to offer young people new professional development opportunities in rural areas affected by the lack of generational replacement. Carmen Corchero, director of DIPSOC, outlines the reasons behind the birth of this project, which aims to inspire other rural regions in Europe to attract younger generations through the safeguarding of religious heritage. READ MORE >>

€500,000 OF EU FUNDING FOR THE MEDIEVAL SYNAGOGUE OF HÍJAR
The medieval Synagogue and Jewish quarter of Híjar in Spain have received €500,000 from the EU to continue working on its restoration. Our member Foundation for Jewish Heritage has been collaborating since 2018 with the municipality of Híjar to rescue this religious heritage treasure and was recently commissioned to create a roadmap for the recovery of the building and the Jewish quarter. CCT WINS THE 'RESTORATION OR CONSERVATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR' PRIZE FOR ITS 1719 PROJECT
Our member organisation The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) has won the "Restoration or Conservation Project of the Year" Award at the Museum + Heritage Awards 2022 for their 17Nineteen project. 
This project has safeguarded the future of the Holy Trinity Church in Sunderland, United Kingdom, by creating a space for community engagement, learning experiences and celebrating heritage.

SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION TO BECOME THE RELIGIOUS HERITAGE INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR! 
(DEADLINE: 31 OCTOBER)

The entry period is open to participating in our "Religious Heritage Innovator of the Year" competition. We are looking for projects or activities that contribute to the sustainability of religious heritage sites in Europe. If you have a project or idea  that offers innovative tools, new perspectives or explores a new concept apply by 31 October. FRH will invite the winner to participate in the 2023 FRH Biennial Conference in Lund, Sweden, with all costs covered.

LILIAN GROOTSWAGERS AWARDED WITH THE PRESTIGIOUS TON KOOT MEDAL
The President of the FRH Advisory Board, Mrs Lilian Grootswagers, received the Ton Kootpenning, a prestigious award for heritage conservationists on Saturday 14 May. The board of the Dutch heritage organisation Heemschut decided to award the medal to Mrs Grootswagers for her many years of dedication to the preservation of monumental buildings and the subsequent dissemination of the experiences she learned with this work. READ MORE >>
THIRD RUN FOR HERITAGE OF 2022 HELD IN POTES, SPAIN
A group of enthusiastic young people walked through the streets of Potes, touring the religious buildings of the area to create a heritage route through its most significant buildings. The activity was organised by FRH Member organisation Centro de Estudios Lebaniegos, in Spain. It was part of the Run for Heritage programme, which promotes outdoor activities for young people to get to know their religious buildings during the European Year of Youth. READ MORE>>.

NEW EUROPEAN BAUHAUS FESTIVAL - CELEBRATING SUSTAINABILITY FOR RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS
The exhibition "Sublime Beauty, Sublime Sustainability" highlighted the three projects developed in the frame of the "Sublieme schoonheid | sublieme duurzaamheid" competition organised by the government of the Netherlands. The aim of this competition was to find ideas for a sustainable future of monumental church buildings, in line with the "Church vision" that is being implemented in this country. FRH visited the exhibition and talked with some of the architects of the competition's working groups. READ MORE >>
7 MOST ENDANGERED PROGRAMME 2023 - CALL FOR NOMINATIONS 
The 7 Most Endangered Programme has opened the call for nominations for its 2023 edition. This programme searches for European cultural heritage sites at risk of deterioration, abandonment or disappearance. The winners receive financial support through a European Investment Bank Institute grant of up to 10,000 euros. Nominations can be submitted by public and private bodies active in the heritage field, member organisations of the European Heritage Alliance, and members of Europa Nostra and its Country Representations The deadline for nominations is 15 September 2022. READ MORE >>

EUROPEAN HERITAGE LABEL AWARDS AND 10TH ANNIVERSARY FORUM
The European Commission awarded the European Heritage Label to 12 new sites at a gala event attended by the EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel that took place in Brussels on 13 June. This relatively young but already prestigious recognition is given every two years to cultural, natural, or historical heritage sites that represent and promote European values. Among the winners of 2021 were 2 religious sites: Medieval wall paintings in the Gemer and Malohont regions (Slovakia)Echternach Saint Willibrord Heritage (Luxembourg). Following the Awards Ceremony, FRH participated as an expert guest in the 10th Anniversary Forum to help shape the future of this European recognition. READ MORE >>
