In March of 1869 a group of women met on a stormy night. … they were the wives of missionaries in India, home on furlough, and were told of the desperate needs of women in India...

We've heard this story before. It's the start of the United Methodist Women!

This Sunday we are celebrating the history of United Methodist women, learning a bit about their new name, "United Women in Faith," and hearing a word of scripture about our call to servanthood as disciples!

If you want to read ahead, our scripture is Mark 10:35-45.

Looking forward to seeing you in worship!

Pastor Lori

Summer Fun Sundays!
Woodlawn has some great, fun upcoming Sundays in store for the next several weeks!

Of course, on Sunday, July 3, we will be celebrating with our annual “Red White and Blue Jean Sunday” on the south side of our building with one outdoor service at 10 AM.  In addition to our Praise Band and Choir, we will be featuring our VBS children who will come to celebrate a great end to VBS!   We will have food trucks in the parking lot for lunch, and games and activities for children and families following the service.

The following week, July 10th, we will begin a special summer worship series, “Summer Funnies,” featuring some great family-friendly comedy films. The featured films will be: “Bruce Almighty,” “Evan Almighty,” “Princess Bride,” “Sandlot,” “The Croods” and “The Croods New Age.”  Each Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, we will have a movie watch party at the church for those who would like to see the entire film.

I hope you’ll make plans now for these special fun Sundays all summer long!  In the meantime, Pastor Lori will be preaching this week, and we will be celebrating with our United Women of Faith, formerly known as the UMW.

Until Sunday,

Vacation Bible School is NEXT WEEK!
Monday – Friday 9am-11:30am.

Food Truck Party VBS invites children, ages 3 to starting 5th grade, to get on a roll with God as a parade of food trucks rolls into our neighborhood for the summer's biggest party!

Using Matthew 6:11; "Give us this day our daily bread," children are invited to pray as Jesus teaches. These words serve as a reminder that everything we have comes from God - and our daily needs are met by God. Through stories in both the Old and New Testaments, this VBS opens kids' eyes to the countless ways God provides, loves, and cares for us while inviting them to join God in providing, loving, and caring for others. The goal of Food Truck Party is to help children build on the practice of using daily prayer to turn to God for their needs - and also to serve as the hands of God in ensuring that the needs of others are met. Can’t wait to see you there!

Register for VBS now! Cost is $10 ($11 if you pay online) and this includes a week of fun and a t-shirt! If you are a volunteer or would like to volunteer, you and your children can come for free! I am still looking for some volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know.

See you soon!

Moment for Mission

Good Samaritan Fund

DERBY COMMUNITY FAMILY SERVICES offers two services to anyone living in USD260:  #1 - they can pick up food from the food pantry once a month, and #2 - they can receive utility assistance once a year (maximum amount of $400).

The utility assistance program is called "Good Samaritan" or "Good Sam."  Funds for this program come from two sources: $800 a month is donated from WUMC Thrift Shop, and the rest comes from individual donations.  During 2021, Good Sam helped 125 families and paid out over $40,000 in utility help.  There has been a greater need than ever this year.  Since January 1, we have already paid out over $37,000 and helped approximately 116 families.

All donations to help us help others are greatly appreciated!

Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or
go to www.woodlawnumc.net and click the “Giving” link to give online.

Perhaps you have noticed some “Fresh Faces” around Woodlawn since we returned to in person Worship? We have revived our “We are Woodlawn” feature and are highlighting some “Fresh Faces” in the congregation! Read on below to learn a little more about these folks, and you can call them by name next time you see them!

We were introduced to Woodlawn because our son started attending Jack and Jill preschool. Trenton is the GM at Westlake Ace Hardware whilst I, Michele, stay home with the boys (Liam and Ronan) and run my handmade small business during naptimes & bedtimes. We also have another little one on the way! We moved from Western Kansas in 2019 to grow Trenton’s career.

-The Leikers

Ted and Florence are both retired teachers. Most of our years in the classroom were at Hugoton, KS. Ted taught high school math and Florence taught middle school home economics.  After we retired from our teaching jobs, we moved to our family farm near Liberal for about 15 years before we moved to Derby. Our daughter, Janet Sprecker, and her family live in Derby. Our son, Michael Metcalf, and his family live in Prairie Village. We moved to Derby to be closer to our children and grandchildren.

Woodlawn member Colene Read was the realtor who sold us our house in Derby about three years ago. When she found out that we are United Methodists, she invited us to church and to the CATS Sunday School Class.

We love to travel. Prior to covid, we traveled to Europe, Australia, China, South Africa, Canada, and Alaska.

Operation Back-to-School

It is that time of year again to start looking for backpacks to help the USD260 students as they begin school this fall.  Backpacks for all ages are needed, especially larger sizes for the older kids.  Look for the big blue donation box outside the church office.  Backpacks are needed by the end of July.
Thank you for supporting Operation Back-to-School!
THURSDAY 7 AM MEN’S BREAKFAST AND BOOK STUDY

MEN! The TMBABS has moved to 7 a.m. and will resume on July 7th (Get it? 7 on the 7th!) for breakfast and the beginning of our review of Tim Johnson’s, “Finding God in the Questions: A Personal Journey.”  Dr. Johnson’s diverse medical career included clinical practice, education, and TV (ABC) reporting. He continues as an associate minister at his local Massachusetts church. If you have ever wondered how a Christian faith can survive in a secular culture, this work may answer some of your questions.

This ad hoc group is aimed at men who enjoy a hearty breakfast: the breakfast always concludes by 8 A.M.*  A volunteer reads excerpts from the book while the group eats, interrupts and debates. Any donations in the past have been given to the Angel House Orphanage and School in Tanzania. This small group would welcome an influx of newcomers. Some of the regulars think the food is safe to eat! Call Frank O’Donnell (788-3224) or the church office (788-1507) for more information, or just show up at the Worship Center kitchen at 7 A.M. on Thursday, July 7th.

*Leaving early for work or the golf course is okay.

Joys, Prayers, and Concerns

Tammy Cuadra shares her thanks: “Thank you to Woodlawn UMC’s “Good Samaritans,” Skeeter White, his grandson Trevor, Bryce Fuhrmann & Dan Feldt for all their assistance with coordination/scheduling, use of truck/gas & all their manhandling of my sofa sleeper & rocker/recliner out of my basement and to Goodwill for donation. Sending up prayers that none of them are sore from it in the morning!! They deserve a hand for blessing me sooo much. It will help me in continuing to dry out my basement!!”

Please keep the Fuhrmann family in your healing prayers. Their son, Evan, tested positive for Covid Sunday morning, followed by Bryce testing positive on Tuesday. Stephanie and Elise were also showing some mild symptoms earlier this week.

If you, or someone you know, has a joy, a concern, or just needs prayers, send to main@woodlawnumc.net or call the church office at 788-1507.
