Dear <<First Name>>,
View from the Study
The theme of my speech on Friday’s Sports Day was that of appreciation: appreciation of all the efforts, from children and adults alike, that had gone into making not just one, but two Sports Days such happy and positive days; appreciation of the dedication and care of those members of staff that leave Belhaven at the end of this academic year; and, finally, appreciation of one another’s talents, emphasising the fundamental importance of recognising and celebrating the abilities of others in the pursuit of self-awareness and personal growth.
My abiding memory of last week will be of the mutual respect demonstrated by James and Zaccharie as they battled it out for the top spot in the High Jump final, and of the excitement shown by the entire school as records toppled over a memorable Friday lunchtime.
If you've missed it, you might like to see Belhaven's encouraging Good Schools Guide review. Feel free to share it!
As this academic year draws to a close, I would be very grateful if you would be willing to fill out this short Parent Survey so that we can continue to improve as we plan for our Centenary year.
Your support, as ever, is very much appreciated.

Congratulations for Common Entrance Results! |
|
Huge congratulations to all of Form 1, who have all passed their Common Entrance to their first-choice senior schools!
As is traditional, all children in Form 1 sit Common Entrance, regardless of whether they have taken scholarship exams or if they are returning to their home country to re-join their old school – this creates a great sense of cohesion, not to mention ensuring that they all maintain an excellent work ethic to the very end of their time at Belhaven.
This year, our leavers are destined for the following schools (in alphabetical order) as a result of their endeavours:
- Ampleforth (1 scholarship)
- Colegio Santa Maria de los Rosales, Madrid
- Collège Maurice de Broglie, Brogolie
- Fettes (3; 2 scholarships)
- Loretto (2; 2 scholarships)
- Lycée Français de Bruxelles
- Lycee Français, Valencia
- Lycée Stendhal, Milan
- Maristas HHNN Chamberí (Marist Brothers), Madrid
- Oundle (4)
- Rugby (2; 1 scholarship)
- Sedbergh (1)
- Stewart’s Melville (1)
- Stowe (2)
- Strathallan (2; 3 scholarships)
- St. Mary’s Ascot (1 scholarship)
Well done to you all! |

Non-Stop Leavers' Programme! |
With Common Entrance behind them and just over a fortnight left of the Summer term, this time of year sees a Leavers’ Programme for Form 1.
This includes some traditional Belhaven events such as the Iron Will and Superstars, the Leavers’ Dinner, to which each member of Form 1 is encouraged to bring a guest (not a parent) to see their school. Of course, there are also various parent events – cricket, tennis and rounders matches, lunches and a Sunday evening Leavers’ Service in the Front Hall.
During the first week of the Leavers’ Programme, Form 1 have helped with the Pre-Prep Sports day, been to Go Ape at Dalkeith and out for supper in Edinburgh, have played fixtures against Cargilfield and also been to Fettes to spend a morning learning what it is like to be at senior school...
We look to celebrate all that they have given to the school during their time with us and they, in turn, reflect on friendships made and lessons learnt during this, the formative period of their education. |

The First Ever Pre-Prep Sports Day! |
|
Thursday 16th June – possibly the hottest day of the year so far and certainly the most exciting for the Pre-Prep and their parents and teachers!
Guests were treated to a fine display from our young Pipe Band before events got underway with a gruelling 800m. Some of the smaller ones all but disappeared in the dip at the far end of the track, but all eventually resurfaced and ran gallantly.
Sufficient energy was reserved for long jump, high jump and rounders ball and many more races, including the 400m, 200m and the 60m - all before the real fun started with a tattie and spoon race, a three-legged race and, most controversial of all, the sack race!
After delicious picnics in the glorious sunshine, a brief awards ceremony saw the Headmaster present the new Pre-Prep Victor Ludorum trophy to Xander L. This beautiful new trophy is courtesy of the Campbell family to mark George’s fantastic contribution to athletics at Belhaven.

The 99th Prep Sports Day! |
|
An email warning of East Lothian wind and rain in the early hours of Friday morning proved to be overly cautious – as the morning wore on, things steadily improved and our little corner of the coast seemed to escape most of the threatening clouds.
The wind tore around the campus, but not as fast as James T, who lit up the day with a succession of remarkable personal performances. First went the long-standing 200m record – C.G. Osborne’s record of 26.2s was reduced by over a second to 25.1s; then, amidst feverish excitement, H. Hawkins’ Long Jump record was obliterated – 5.42m is now the mark for all aspiring jumpers!
Having narrowly failed to equal the indoor High Jump record of 1.51m, James returned to the track to beat W. Gail’s 100m record, shaving 0.2s off the previous mark in recording a time of 12.2s.
Maggie J also joined in the fun, setting a new Junior Girls’ Long Jump record as personal bests were recorded by so many of the children.
Well done everyone for getting the day exactly right – intense competition cocooned by fiercer friendship! |

LAMDA Success! |

Huge congratulations to all 19 of our LAMDA candidates, all of whom have passed their Summer term exam; a particular well done to the 11 who earned a Distinction and to Alexander, who achieved the highest mark (89) that Mrs. McGrath has ever seen!
Thank you to LAMDA teacher Jennifer Lowrie – well done to you all. |

Art and Design End of Year Exhibition |
|
The Art and Design classrooms hosted the annual exhibition and parents enjoyed a feast of wonderful work both upstairs and down.
From self-portraits to paintings of the school; from clay creatures to surrealist sculpture, sketches in pencil, to studies in pastels, marionettes, to board games and brushmonsters – this exhibition had it all!
The new display boards enabled more to be seen and I cannot even begin to do justice to the work in words – please see the photo gallery on the website, coming soon! |

More BAFTA Success for Polar Bear Tom! |

Tom W, fresh from the glow of success in London at the Raspberry Pi awards, is clearly hungry for more – his new game, BOMB Pong, has been shortlisted for the final of the BAFTA Young Game Designers competition. This time, he will be travelling to London on July 9th for the awards ceremony!
You can download and play BOMB Pong here, and you can listen to the excellent interview that he gave on BBC Scotland last week here (interview starts at 2':50" where interview starts). Well done Tom! |
