Autumn Semester 2022

Calling all students writing either an MA or PhD thesis on an Asia-related topic next semester!

Come and engage with the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies through our most important, free of cost student service: The SUPRA programme.

Tap on our expert information and rich resources and help share Asia-related expertise across the Nordic region. The four-week programme is designed to develop PhD and MA students’ theses through supervision, peer review and academic feedback. The recipients also receive an introduction to NIAS LINC’s digital resources and receive sessions on how to further their academic careers through public presentations, podcasts, publishing and social media.

More specifically, the programme includes:

• Individual academic mentoring
• Feedback sessions on your thesis work
• Thorough introduction to the AsiaPortal resources
• Sessions on publishing in academia
• Sessions on career development and how to create an academic presence online
• Opportunity to create an academic podcast

NB: The programme is open to all students writing their MA or PhD thesis on any Asia-related topic, but applicants from NNC institutions will be prioritized.

Find more information and the application form here.

Here's what former SUPRA-students have said about their experiences being on the programme:

“The SUPRA programme has helped me to broaden my approach. I am glad to be part of the prestigious SUPRA programme and I look forward to my future research in the following SUPRA topic. I am thankful to NIAS staff, post-doc scholars … for mentoring me throughout the programme.”
(SUPRA-alumni, February, 2022)

“Thank you for the opportunity. Four weeks with NIAS got me so inspired to keep on doing what I am doing. To be able to meet and connect with amazingly talented scholars is one of the best things in the programme.”
(SUPRA-alumni, May, 2021)

“The NIAS Librarian has been extraordinarily supportive in helping me locate a source I was not able to find. And she found it in Cambridge!”
(SUPRA-alumni, February, 2022)

Bénédicte Brac de la Perrière and Peter A. Jackson with the Nordic Asia Podcast

What is the relationship between Spirit Possession Rituals and Buddhism in mainland Southeast Asia?

How has modernity transformed Spirit Possession cults in the 21st century and
what has led to the efflorescence of possession rituals across Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in recent decades?

Bénédicte Brac de la Perrière and Peter A. Jackson joined Terese Gagnon on the Nordic Asia Podcast handing out important insights of their new edited volume 'Spirit Possession in Buddhist Southeast Asia, Worlds Ever More Enchanted'.

Spirit Possession examines the upsurge of spirit cults and diverse forms of magical ritual in Buddhist Southeast Asia by exploring the interplay of neoliberal capitalism, visual media, the network cultures of the Internet, and the politics of cultural heritage and identity.

Visit the NIAS Press Webshop to find the book and get your copy here.

Incoming title in 2022

Our next book to be presented in the framework of the outlook 2022 is Vibeke Børdahl & Lintao Qi's book 'Jin Ping Mei. A Wild Horse in Chinese Literature'.

The late 16th-century novel Jin Ping Mei is considered one of the six classics of Chinese literature but also something of a wild horse, its graphically explicit depiction of sexuality earning it great notoriety. The present volume aims to draw together the fragmented scholarship on Jin Ping Mei and help future generations to understand and appreciate this important work.

Jin Ping Mei  is scheduled to be published in November 2022, and we'll promise to keep you updated along the way. Visit our website, or follow us on our social media, where where we regularly inform about new publications. See the buttons below
