Dear Supporter of Hadrian’s Villa,

I am Prof. Bernard Frischer, Director of the Digital Hadrian’s Villa Project (http://vwhl.soic.indiana.edu/villa/) and the person behind the international petition several years ago. Its purpose was to save Hadrian’s Villa from the environmental degradation that would inevitably have affected the site had the Regione Lazio succeeded in its plan to install its main rubbish dump for Rome at nearby Corcolle. We won that battle thanks to your help and support.

Now, I write to you as the founder and president of Flyover Zone, an employee-owned company that creates curated virtual tours to the world’s great cultural heritage sites. You can learn more about us at: www.flyoverzone.com

We just released “Hadrian’s Villa Reborn: Stadium Garden” and eight other tours on Yorescape, our new platform for virtual tourism. Yorescape is free. You can use it on your smartphone or tablet (Android, iOS) or personal computer (Windows, Macintosh). Later this year, we will add support for the Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest.

If, as I hope, you would like to try out Yorescape and take our virtual tour of the Stadium Garden, just follow this link: www.yorescape.com

What was the Stadium Garden? First, let’s clear up the confusion caused by its name. It was neither a stadium (a place for Greek-style athletic competitions) nor a garden. Instead, it was an entertainment complex used, especially, in warm weather. It featured two large halls, the only sculpture gallery known at Hadrian’s Villa, an intimate dining room for the emperor and his friends, and a nymphaeum decorated with 16 statues illustrating the tragic myth of Niobe and her children. On our virtual tour, you can see all these features….and more.

I very much hope you enjoy this tour and our other offerings and that you will become a regular member of the growing Yorescape community!

Yours,
Bernard Frischer
