Matt Meyer

Join BC Unitarian congregations for a service with Matt Meyer on Sunday, August 14th at 11 am.

Our favorite songs, whoever the artist or whatever the style, were created in a strange alchemy of study and inspiration, of strict practice and of letting go.

Spiritual Practice is a similar combination of dedication, muscle memory, and perhaps a little divine inspiration. Join us for a musical exploration of learning to risk, building the muscle memory of courage, and the spiritual practice of relationship when things around us are changing fast.

Matt is a musician and worship leader who has led hundreds of services for UU congregations across the country. He has a degree in hand drumming from Berklee College of Music and serves as Director of Community Life for Sanctuary Boston.

You can attend the service in-person at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver or via livestream.

The Eliot Institute

Eliot Institute is a non-profit corporation affiliated with the Pacific Northwest District of the Unitarian Universalist Association. It is managed by a volunteer board of directors made up of representatives from the established conferences held each year. Eliot Institute has been presenting camps and conferences since 1947, and currently holds camps each year at Seabeck. Here’s a list of upcoming camps:

• July Eliot 2022: “Shaping Unitarian Universalist into a Multicultural Faith”, with Rev. Meg Riley and Aisha Hauser, beginning on Saturday, July 16, 2022

• August Eliot 2022: “Music Lessons & Rhythm Revelations: with Matthew Meyer, beginning on Saturday, August 06, 2022. Our very own Rev. Samaya is one of the Deans for this camp.

Our UU History: PT Barnum

Phineas Taylor Barnum was born in Bethel, Connecticut on July 5, 1810.

He was reared a stern Puritan but became a devoted Universalist.

The museum he opened in New York City featured natural history exhibits and curiosities. Barnum is best known for operating “The Greatest Show on Earth,” his circus, but he was also civic-minded and served in the Connecticut legislature from 1867 to 1869 as a Republican. He was also mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Barnum called himself the “prince of Humbugs” but donated funds to build a museum of natural history at Tufts University. He died on April 7 1891.
