A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

George Seurat

1884-1886, oil on canvas; 2.08 m x 3.08 m, The Art Institute of Chicago

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is George Seurat’s most famous work. It is so universally recognized, in fact, that a Broadway musical based on it was created by Stephen Sondheim (Sunday in the Park with George).

It is a founding work of the neo-impressionist movement and a quintessential example of the pointillist technique on a large canvas.

In this video, the Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, explains what makes this painting a masterpiece.
