Fireworks and Flares

Information and Concerns

FIREWORKS – New London has decided to adopt a fireworks ordinance.  You can read about it in June 10th Municipal Matters.  Until the town’s ordinance is finalized, please be respectful of your neighbors if using personal fireworks, and preferably limit their use to holiday weekends and not after 10 pm. Some of our neighbors and their pets are sensitive to unexpected loud noises.

The PLPA board formed a committee to research the environmental impacts of flares and fireworks.  Some personal fireworks have more pollutants than do professional ones, so please be mindful of debris falling into the lake.  A copy of the committee’s report and a summary of it can be found on www.plpa.net on the home page under “Recent Posts"

FLARES- We have more environmentally friendly options for flares. PLPA recommends that people consider trying an LED flare as an alternative to the traditional flares. They  are very bright, leave no residue on our lakeshore, can be used year after year, and can be kept in your car to use as emergency flashers!  These LED flares are available at the sites listed below or CLICK ON THIS LINK to find them on Amazon.

If you want to continue using the traditional flares, we recommend those that do not contain perchlorates (look for NPC on the label), like the Orion brand of flares the PLPA previously sold. These are less toxic, particularly if post-illumination debris is kept out of the lake, which is why those being sold below will come with a pie plate.

Both options are available at locations listed below
PLPA is managed by volunteers and supported by member donations.  If you wish to become a member please visit http://plpa.net/membership/
