Manitoba's Ramogi Nyagudi Invited to Canada Basketball U17 National Team ID Camp

TORONTO, ONT. (June 18, 2022) – Canada Basketball announced Saturday the 20 players invited to attend training camp at Humber College from June 19th-25th ahead of the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022.  The invite list includes Manitoba athlete Ramogi Nyagudi of St. Paul's High School who was identified at an open camp earlier this spring.  Ramogi was announced a member of the Team Manitoba 18U Canada Games team last week that will represent the province in August at the 2022 Canada Games in Niagra Falls, ON.  He was also named to the AAAA Boys All-Manitoba Team as part of the Basketball Manitoba Awards announced in April.

The FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022 will be held July 2-10, 2022 at the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena in Malaga, Spain and fans can catch all the action streaming live on FIBA YouTube.

Coming off a bronze medal at the FIBA U18 Americas Championship 2022 last week, head coach Patrick Tatham is back to lead Canada once again and his U16 coaching staff from last summer remains intact as assistant coaches Jason Dawkins, Charles Hantoumakos and Tarry Upshaw also return.

Canada is in Group A and will face Asia TBC (July 2, 7:15 AM ET), France (July 3, 9:45 AM ET) and Serbia (July 5, 9:45 AM ET).

All teams qualify for the Round of 16, where they will cross between Groups A and B and C and D (A1 v B4, A2 v B3, etc.). The winners of the Round of 16 games advance to the quarter-finals, while the losers move on to the classification games for places 9-16.

The FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022 will be the first U17 age-group event since 2018 when Canada finished fourth.  The FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2020 was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Players selected to attend training camp attended a Canada Basketball Men’s High Performance National Team Age-Group Assessment Camp in April.

Canada is currently ranked 4th overall in the FIBA men’s age-group rankings, presented by Nike.

Canada West Announces 2022-23 Basketball Season Schedules

CALGARY - Old rivalries are soon to reignite. Canada West released its basketball schedule Monday, unveiling a full slate of conference-wide games starting November 4.  All three Manitoba teams will tip off the season at home with the Bisons hosting Alberta, the Bobcats hosting Regina and the Wesmen hosting Thompson Rivers.

Teams that haven't faced each other in three years will square off as last season's divisional play due to COVID-19 comes to an end.

Fans won't have to wait long to see last season's top two teams on the men's side duel it out. Alberta takes on Victoria in Edmonton on November 18 & 19.

The back-and-forth battle for dominance that was the Winnipeg and Saskatchewan match-up on the women's side will have to wait until playoffs this year, which are scheduled for February 17 & 18 for both men and women.

This year's format will look more similar to that of 2019, with the fifth to twelfth ranked teams moving into play-in games ahead of the quarterfinal match-ups.

The only difference is those games will all go ahead the same weekend, meaning the top four seeds will host both their quarter-final match-up, and the game deciding their opponent.

The conference's top four teams on both the men's and women's sides will then advance to the semifinals on February 25. Teams will be reseeded for this, with the top two hosting their respective matches. The final four will vie for a spot in the Championship game on March 4, 2023. A bronze medal match will also be scheduled for that weekend if needed to determine a third nationals representative.

Teams will then have a week off before jetting off to St. Francis Xavier University (men's) or Cape Breton University (women's). The U SPORTS national championships are slated for March 9-12.

  • the continued growth of our heritage inventory collection; this year we saw some new additions of uniforms and other memorabilia
  • the further organization of all printed materials and photographs in our collection with the use of labelled hanging folders and vertical magazine racks in a new storage cabinet
  • the first grant from our endowment fund through the Manitoba Heritage Trust Fund and the Winnipeg Foundation where we raised funds to ensure our long-term sustainability
  • we continued to qualify as a Level 1 Museum by the Community Museum Grants Program which results in an annual grant

  • based on our involvement in a stewardship project with the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, we now have a Collections Policy, an Incoming Loan Conditions Form, an Outgoing Loan Agreement Form, and a Gift Agreement Form
  • our continued membership in the Association of Manitoba Museums
  • our financial situation remains solid; we are committed to investing our revenues directly into our Hall of Fame site and the basketball community in general
  • Manitoba is still the only province in Canada that has a permanent site for a basketball hall of fame
  • Our MBHOFM is usually open every day during the year except for statutory holidays. It is open
  • from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily depending on the pandemic.
  • The members of our organizing committee are:
    • Ross Wedlake (Chair), Vic Pruden (Past Chair), Janet McMahon (Treasurer), Jerry Ilchyna, Wes Crymble, Morris Glimcher, Jerry Hemmings, Carol Ploen-Hosegood, Ken Opalko, Susan Johnson, Coleen Dufresne, Kyla Shore, Tyler Crayston, Ted Stoesz, and Adam Wedlake (Recording Secretary - Ex-Officio).
  • For 2022-23 the following are planned:
    • the creation of a third action photo collection depicting the history of basketball in Manitoba
    • further organization of our heritage collection and a connection to the MUSETOBA collections management database project system
    • repairs to our museum's floor surface
In conclusion, we need to mention the tremendous and continuing support we get from the University of Winnipeg and Basketball Manitoba. Our Hall of Fame and Museum would not exist without this support and the support of our extended basketball community.

Respectfully submitted by

Ross Wedlake, Chair, MBHOFM
